About the Role

The Welding Engineer applies thorough welding knowledge to address a variety of straightforward welding challenges under moderate guidance from colleagues and leadership. The role requires analyzing possible solutions based on standard procedures, company practices, and customer needs. A solid understanding of critical business drivers aids in making sound technical judgments for welding-related issues.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Create project welding procedures that align with relevant design, engineering, construction codes, standards, and project specifications.
  • Manage the project welder qualification program to ensure compliance and effectiveness.
  • Analyze customer drawings and specifications to identify material and welding requirements, specifying the appropriate Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and Procedure Qualification Records (PQR).
  • Choose electrodes and welding consumables and estimate their quantities for project needs.
  • Procure materials necessary for WPS and PQR development.
  • Design joints and optimize welding processes for efficiency and quality.
  • Ensure proposed welding procedures comply with applicable codes and specifications.
  • Develop project and task-specific Welding Qualification Execution plans.
  • Submit WPS and PQR documentation packages for project approval.
  • Conduct toolbox talks and organize welding kickoff sessions.
  • Qualify welding procedures and welder capabilities by overseeing welding execution plans.
  • Supervise Procedure Qualification Records testing onsite and observe lab tests.
  • Prepare welding procedure specifications and review welder qualification test results for approval.
  • Determine necessary amounts of production welding tests and coordinate their timely completion.
  • Collaborate with customer engineers and Production Supervisors to resolve metallurgical and welding issues.
  • Support the advancement of automated welding systems and new welding methodologies (especially for AWS engineers).
  • Oversee activities at the metallurgical laboratory and the welding school, including welder training and certification processes.
  • Review welding documentation submitted by vendors.
  • Coordinate with Welding School Supervisors, Production Supervisors, and certifying authorities.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree (4 years) in Welding Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering.
  • At least 3 years' experience in welding or metallurgy pertaining to fabrication and construction industries.
  • Preference for candidates with welding technology knowledge and an understanding of nondestructive testing (NDT) techniques.
  • Inspection qualification is also preferred.
