Job description
About the Role
The Alexa Sensitive Content Intelligence (ASCI) team develops the Responsible AI platform for Alexa+, focusing on machine learning-powered infrastructure to ensure content safety across cloud and on-device environments. The systems utilize encoder models, retrieval augmented generation (RAG) systems, and large language models to moderate sensitive content across text, images, video, and LLM-generated responses in real-time.
As a Software Development Manager, you will lead a team building robust ML inference infrastructure and content safety services for Alexa+ devices and cloud environments. Responsibilities include overseeing the full model lifecycle from onboarding through production, enhancing deployment pipelines for diverse model classes (encoder, decoder, encoder-decoder) supporting text classification, multimedia content analysis, and LLM moderation tasks.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and expand a high-performing engineering team delivering ML inference and content moderation services across cloud and onsite devices.
- Manage inference optimizations including GPU/CPU serving strategies for the cloud and model compression/distillation for constrained devices.
- Develop and maintain automated one-click continuous model deployment infrastructure with zero-downtime rollouts, validation, and rollback functionalities across cloud and edge platforms.
- Architect scalable real-time and batch serving systems for multi-modal content moderation globally.
- Optimize on-device moderation capabilities focusing on latency, memory footprint, power efficiency, while ensuring moderation accuracy.
- Maintain operational excellence targeting high availability (99.95%+), latency, cost efficiency, and multi-region reliability.
- Collaborate with applied scientists on model architectural trade-offs and with platform teams on traffic management, capacity planning, and device integration.
- Cultivate engineering talent with enthusiasm for cutting-edge ML hosting and infrastructure optimizations.
Team Overview
The ASCI organization includes over 60 engineers, 30+ applied scientists, around 7 product managers, and 50+ operations staff. The team works on innovative projects leveraging LLMs, encoder models, and retrieval augmented generation to ensure Alexa+ policy compliance worldwide. The customer feedback sub-team manages the "Report A Bug" feature, acting as a voice for customers. The team supports efficient ML infrastructure for hosting over 20 ML models and interfacing with multiple LLMs in Bedrock.
Basic Qualifications
- Minimum 10 years developing scalable, multi-tier distributed software systems with distributed programming expertise.
- At least 3 years managing engineering teams.
- Strong understanding of software engineering best practices across the full SDLC, including coding standards, code reviews, source control, builds, testing, certification, and live-site operations.
- Experience collaborating with product and program management teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ability to communicate effectively with users, technical teams, and senior leadership to gather requirements, explain product features, technical designs, and strategy.
- Experience recruiting, hiring, mentoring, and managing software engineers to enhance their skills and effectiveness.
