Role Overview
The Meter Reader position reports directly to the Meter Services Supervisor and is essential in accurately reading and inspecting gas, electric, and water meters. This role involves extensive outdoor activity and requires excellent time management alongside adaptability to daily work variations.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct daily and special meter readings primarily at customers' premises to facilitate billing.
- Complete assigned cycle readings within scheduled timeframes, assign sequence numbers for new services, and modify reading routes as needed.
- Inspect meters for damages or malfunctions and report findings to supervision.
- Identify and address unsafe situations or clean meter boxes professionally.
- Operate various meter reading devices for electric, gas, and water.
- Utilize hand tools such as screwdrivers, pliers, flashlights, keys, gas detectors, and pumps as required.
- Reference printed materials like service orders, maps, manuals, and computer-generated reports.
- Assist with the training and onboarding of new meter readers.
Physical and Environmental Demands
- Spend considerable time standing and walking, sometimes covering up to 20 miles daily in diverse weather including rain, snow, and extreme temperatures.
- Regularly exert physical effort moving objects weighing typically 10 lbs, occasionally up to 50 lbs.
Customer Interaction
- Redirect consumer complaints to appropriate departments.
- Provide general information about meter services when applicable.
- Communicate with management and customers using telephones, tablets, or computers effectively.
Candidate Profile and Requirements
- Minimum: Some high school education, 18 years or older, valid driver's license, and at least one year of experience working outdoors. Training in meter reading will be provided.
- Preferred: High school diploma or GED and one year of meter reading experience.
- Strong multitasking skills with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Excellent flexibility to adapt routes and schedules daily.
- Good time management to ensure timely completion of readings by devising efficient daily plans.
- Effective communication skills, including professionalism in handling difficult or dissatisfied customers.
- Meticulous attention to detail to detect problems and anomalies.
- Capability to handle long-distance walking and varying weather conditions.
Suitability Considerations
- This role is unsuitable for those who prefer not to work independently or outdoors, dislike extensive walking, lack flexibility in daily routines, or have poor planning/time management skills.

- Applicants must pass drug and alcohol screening as mandated by non-regulatory and Federal DOT requirements, particularly for those handling water, electric, and gas meters.
