Role Overview
The Meter Reader works under the supervision of the Meter Services Supervisor to accurately read and inspect water, gas, and electric meters. The position requires physical endurance outdoors, excellent time management skills, and adaptability to varying daily routines.
Primary Duties
- Perform meter readings regularly and on special calls at customer premises for billing purposes.
- Complete assigned tasks within scheduled timelines and assign sequence numbers for new meter services.
- Report any meter damages or malfunctions to supervisors and identify unsafe conditions.
- Utilize meter reading devices and common hand tools such as screwdrivers, pliers, flashlights, keys, gas detectors, generators, pumps, shovels, etc.
- Consult printed materials including service orders, maps, and manuals to assist with routes and requirements.
- Support the training of new employees in meter reading procedures.
Physical and Environmental Requirements
- Extensive walking and standing, potentially covering up to 20 miles daily in various weather conditions (rain, snow, extreme temperatures, etc.).
- Ability to exert physical force, routinely up to 10 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds, during object movement.
Customer Interaction
- Refer customer complaints to proper authorities promptly.
- Provide general meter service information when appropriate.
- Use communication devices such as phones, tablets, or computers to interact with customers and management.
Candidate Profile
- Minimum qualifications include some high school education and being at least 18 years old.
- Possession of a valid driver's license is required.
- Preferred candidates have a high school diploma or GED and at least one year of meter reading experience.
- One year of experience working under outdoor conditions is mandatory.
- Candidates should be capable of multitasking, working independently and collaboratively, and demonstrate strong time management and flexibility.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to handle difficult customers professionally are essential.
- Must pay strong attention to detail and be prepared for long-distance walking and environmental exposure.
Unsuitable Candidates

Testing and Compliance
- Mandatory drug and alcohol testing is enforced following non-regulatory standards for water, electric, and meter-associated work.
- Federal DOT regulations require testing for employees handling gas meters.
Compensation Structure
The position offers a hybrid pay model combining a fixed hourly wage with piece-rate pay upon completion of training.
