Position Summary
The Meter Reader role, reporting to the Meter Services Supervisor, involves accurately reading and inspecting gas, electric, and water meters. The position demands extensive walking outdoors under various environmental conditions, excellent scheduling skills, and daily flexibility. Compensation includes a hybrid pay model with a base hourly rate plus pay per piece after training.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine and special meter readings at customer premises for billing purposes.
- Complete assigned readings within set timelines, assign sequence numbers to new meters, and adjust reading routes as needed.
- Inspect meters for damage or malfunction and report findings to the supervisor.
- Assess and remedy unsafe situations or clean meter boxes when necessary.
- Use various meter reading equipment and hand tools such as gas detectors, flashlights, and shovels.
- Utilize printed materials including service orders, maps, and manuals.
- Assist in training newly hired meter readers.
Physical and Environmental Duties
- Walk extensively, sometimes up to 20 miles per day, in diverse weather conditions such as rain, snow, heat, and cold.
- Stand for prolonged periods during work routines.
- Occasionally exert physical effort moving objects weighing between 10 to 50 pounds.
Customer Interaction
- Refer customer complaints to designated authorities appropriately.
- Provide general information regarding meter services to customers when applicable.
- Employ telephones, tablets, and computers for communication purposes.
Candidate Profile and Requirements
- Minimum: At least some high school education and 18 years of age or older.
- Experience: Minimum one year working outdoors; meter reading training will be provided.
- Must hold a valid driver’s license.
- Preferred: High school diploma or GED, and one year of meter reading experience.
- Strong multitasking abilities, time management, flexibility in scheduling, and excellent communication with customers and management.
- Ability to maintain professionalism when addressing dissatisfied customers.
- Detail-oriented with strong problem-solving capabilities.
- Physically capable of walking long distances and enduring weather conditions.
