About the Employer and Position
Lookout Housing and Health Society is dedicated to providing housing and comprehensive support services to adults facing low or no income and limited housing or assistance options. The organization adopts a low-barrier approach to service, ensuring accessibility for individuals with complex needs. This homemaker role is based at the Lighthouse Shelter in Abbotsford, British Columbia.
Work Schedule and Compensation
This is a full-time permanent position requiring work from Sunday through Thursday with shifts from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, totaling 7.5 hours per shift. Employees are entitled to consecutive days off, although schedules may adjust with a two-week notice. A probationary period of 488 hours is enforced with progress reviews mid-way and at the end. The hourly salary ranges between $23.89 and $25.54, depending on seniority in accordance with the Collective Agreement.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of resident and communal areas, including cleaning rooms, making beds, managing laundry, and organizing supplies.
- Perform comprehensive cleaning tasks such as washing and disinfecting surfaces including walls, windows, floors, carpets, furniture, and washrooms.
- Coordinate and manage donations along with supervising volunteer activities.
- Support clients with personal hygiene and nutritional needs as necessary.
- Remain vigilant and attentive during working hours; sleeping while on duty is strictly prohibited.
- Adhere to and contribute actively to health and safety programs at the workplace.
- Comply with respirator fit testing requirements, including maintaining a clean-shaven face area for mask seal efficacy.
Qualifications and Required Competencies
- Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent, supplemented with at least one year of recent related work experience or equivalent education and training.
- Current Occupational First Aid Level 1 Certificate is mandatory.
- Crisis Intervention Skills Training is advantageous.
- Ability to work independently or collaboratively within a team environment and manage workload effectively.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Understanding of and adherence to professional client-worker boundaries.
- Experience working with disadvantaged or challenging adults across diverse populations.
- Self-motivated and capable of rapid learning.
- Physical and mental capability to fulfill job demands.
- Proficiency in operating relevant equipment such as laundry machines.
- Minimum two years sobriety if previously affected by alcohol or drug-related issues.
- Clear vulnerable sector criminal record check.
Health and Safety Compliance
The role requires successful completion of respirator fit testing and adherence to WorkSafeBC standards as Lookout is COR certified. Employees must maintain a clean-shaven area to ensure an effective respirator seal and pass annual fit tests.
