Work Location and Schedule
This position is based at the Lighthouse Shelter in Abbotsford, British Columbia. The work schedule is Sunday through Thursday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., consisting of 7.5-hour shifts with consecutive days off. Scheduling adjustments may occur with two weeks' notice. A probationary period encompassing 488 hours with scheduled reviews is part of the employment terms.
Job Overview
The Homemaker role reports to the Site Manager, supporting the organization's mission and ethics. Responsibilities include executing comprehensive cleaning duties to maintain cleanliness and order in resident rooms, shelter spaces, and communal areas.
Key Duties
- Perform cleaning tasks including tidying rooms, changing beds, doing laundry, and organizing supplies.
- Disinfect and clean surfaces such as walls, windows, floors, carpets, air vents, furniture, mattresses, blinds, and washrooms.
- Manage donations and coordinate volunteer activities.
- Support clients with personal hygiene and nutritional needs as required.
- Maintain alertness and focus during shifts; sleeping while on duty is prohibited.
- Comply with and actively support all health and safety protocols.
- Fulfill respirator fit test requirements, including maintaining a clean-shaven face for proper seal adherence, in compliance with WorkSafeBC standards.
Essential Qualifications and Skills
- Completion of Grade 12 education and at least one year of relevant recent workplace experience or an equivalent blend of education, training, and experience.
- Current certification in Occupational First Aid Level 1.
- Crisis Intervention Skills Training considered a plus.
- Capability to work autonomously or collaboratively within a team.
- Strong organizational and workload management skills.
- Effective verbal and written communication abilities.
- Understanding and maintaining appropriate boundaries between clients and staff.
- Experience working with disadvantaged and challenging adult populations in diverse settings.
- Self-motivated with quick learning aptitude.
- Physical and mental stamina to perform job-related duties effectively.
- Proficiency in operating work-related equipment including laundry machines.
- At least two years of sobriety required if there have been prior issues with alcohol or drug use.
- Criminal Record Clearance with Vulnerable Sector check is mandatory.
Compensation and Additional Information
The hourly wage ranges from $23.89 to $25.54, determined by length of service as outlined in the Collective Agreement.
