About Lookout Housing and Health Society

Lookout Housing and Health Society supports adults with low or no income who have limited housing or assistance options. The organization minimizes barriers to access to provide essential housing and support services.

Location and Schedule

This position is based in Courtenay, British Columbia, at The Junction-Courtenay. The work schedule runs Monday through Friday from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with shifts lasting 7.5 hours. Employees receive two consecutive days off, though schedules may adjust with two weeks’ notice.

Compensation and Tenure

Salary ranges between $26.72 and $28.48 per hour, dependent on length of seniority and governed by the collective agreement. The role is full-time and permanent, including a probationary period of 488 hours with mid-point and final evaluations.

Role Summary

The Janitor/Maintenance Worker reports to the Site Manager. Responsibilities include maintaining cleanliness inside and outside the building, performing general maintenance related to mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems, and ensuring overall upkeep of the premises.

Key Duties

  • Perform janitorial tasks such as sweeping, washing, waxing floors, and disinfecting surfaces.
  • Manage garbage disposal and recycling container emptying.
  • Monitor and maintain all building systems and equipment.
  • Carry out repairs including plumbing, landscaping, and fixing building suites.
  • Assist and supervise new staff and volunteers while collaborating with team members to meet guest needs.
  • Complete most work internally, with occasional outdoor assignments.
  • Stay attentive and alert; sleeping during shifts is strictly prohibited.
  • Comply with all health and safety requirements and contribute actively to safety programs.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Minimum Grade 12 education with at least two years of recent relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possession of a Building Service Worker Diploma is advantageous.
  • Must hold a current Occupational First Aid Level 1 certificate.
  • Training in Crisis Intervention Skills is a plus.
  • Capable of independent work and functioning within a team environment.
  • Skilled in stress management and workload organization.
  • Proficient in communication, documentation, and organization.
  • Respectful of professional boundaries with clients and co-workers.
  • Experience working with diverse, challenged adult populations.
  • Physically and mentally capable of performing job duties and handling equipment.
  • Minimum of two years sobriety regarding alcohol or drug use concerns.
  • Criminal Record Clearance including Vulnerable Sector check required.

Additional Conditions

The position requires successful respirator fit testing due to compliance with WorkSafeBC and the organization’s certification standards. Employees must be clean-shaven at the respirator seal area. Job duties may include some disagreeable conditions, and employees must be vigilant during working hours.
