Position Overview

We are a leading beverage distribution company based in New Jersey seeking an experienced Controller to manage all accounting and financial activities. This pivotal role requires hands-on leadership to handle financial reporting, internal controls, cash flow management, and system enhancements within a dynamic distribution environment. The ideal candidate will have robust accounting knowledge, operational experience, and a talent for driving improvements in reporting and processes.

Key Responsibilities

• Supervise all accounting functions including general ledger, accounts receivable, accounts payable, inventory, and payroll tasks.
• Ensure accurate and timely preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
• Manage month-end and year-end closing procedures effectively.
• Maintain and reconcile balance sheet accounts.
• Liaise with external CPA firms for tax submissions and year-end audits.
• Track and govern cash flow, managing liquidity prudently.
• Oversee accounts receivable operations and collections, improving ageing and credit policies.
• Manage vendor payments and optimize terms to enhance working capital.
• Create and update cash flow forecasts regularly.
• Control inventory accounting processes and conduct reconciliations to validate inventory valuation and costs.
• Monitor inventory discrepancies and shrinkage while collaborating with operations to reinforce inventory controls.
• Develop margin reports by SKU, customer, and distribution channel and analyze profitability across major accounts such as Costco, Jetro, and Restaurant Depot.
• Support pricing and cost decisions through in-depth data analysis.
• Compile management reports and dashboards to aid strategic decisions.
• Implement and maintain rigorous internal control systems to ensure compliance with applicable laws including New York State container deposit regulations.
• Handle sales tax returns and ensure regulatory reporting adherence.
• Assist in audit processes and documentation preparation.
• Maximize the efficiency of Sage 100 ERP system usage and identify process improvements including automation opportunities.
• Leverage technology and artificial intelligence tools to enhance process efficiency and report accuracy, minimizing manual tasks.

Qualifications

• Minimum of five years' experience as a Controller or in a comparable role within a small to mid-size enterprise.
• Strong background in distribution, beverage, or consumer goods sectors.
• Direct experience with inventory and cost accounting.
• Proven ability managing accounts receivable, collection activities, and cash flow.
• Familiarity with New York State container deposit law accounting and reporting requirements.
• Comprehensive knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting standards.
• Experience with ERP platforms, preferably Sage 100 or similar software.
• Preferred candidates possess a CPA credential or background in public accounting, including auditing experience.
• Experience working in family-owned or entrepreneurial businesses is advantageous.
• Proven track record in implementing system enhancements and automation.
• Advanced skills in Excel and financial modeling.
