Job Overview
The Assistant Underwriter will play a crucial role in driving profitable growth within the Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) commercial insurance portfolio. Collaborating closely with intermediaries, clients, and internal teams, this position focuses on risk evaluation, supporting both renewals and new business initiatives, and delivering underwriting solutions to foster portfolio expansion and positive customer experiences.
Key Responsibilities
- Handle renewals and new business assessments to offer customized underwriting strategies that promote customer retention and portfolio growth.
- Establish and nurture strong partnerships with intermediaries and business stakeholders to ensure high-quality service and outcomes.
- Contribute to achieving targets for growth, profitability, and portfolio performance by applying sound risk evaluation and decision-making.
- Work collaboratively with distribution, operations, claims, and underwriting divisions to ensure smooth experiences for customers and partners.
- Manage digital referral workflows and support efforts to enhance underwriting procedures, systems, and client satisfaction.
- Recognize and support innovation, automation, and continuous enhancement in underwriting operations.
- Uphold a robust risk and performance culture by following underwriting guidelines, policies, and governance standards.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Proven experience in commercial underwriting, insurance, or related positions within general insurance.
- Strong knowledge of commercial insurance products, underwriting principles, and risk evaluation methodologies.
- Ability to forge effective relationships with brokers, intermediaries, clients, and internal teams.
- Excellent skills in communication, negotiation, and stakeholder engagement.
- Competency in problem-solving and decision-making with a balanced approach toward commercial and risk management priorities.
- Familiarity with the New Zealand commercial insurance landscape and the SME market segment.
- Desirable: Relevant industry certifications or tertiary education qualifications.
