Position Summary
The Traffic Control Flagger is tasked with directing vehicular movement safely around construction zones, maintenance sites, and other roadway work areas. This role involves installation and removal of traffic control signs, cones, and barricades to secure the safety of workers and the public alike. The flagger uses various hand signals, signage, and control devices to efficiently guide motorists past or around active work zones. This position demands sharp attention to detail, endurance to work outdoors in diverse weather scenarios, and the physical capacity to stand for prolonged durations.
Primary Responsibilities
- Deploy signs, cones, and other traffic control devices strategically around active work areas to redirect traffic flow.
- Manage traffic movement using stop/slow paddles diligently and safely.
- Maintain seamless communication with team members via two-way radios during operations.
- Stand, walk, and reach for extended periods, often up to 10 hours daily.
- Lift or manipulate equipment and materials weighing more than 50 pounds when necessary.
- Operate company vehicles to transport traffic control equipment to and from job sites.
- Conduct routine inspections and basic maintenance checks to ensure vehicles remain operational and safe.
- Regular exposure to outdoor elements, including weather variations, active machinery, moving traffic, fumes, and airborne particles.
- Function in work environments that often experience moderate to loud noise levels.
- Comply fully with all company policies and regulations related to safety and operational protocols.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisors or management.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Possession of a valid driver's license is mandatory.
- Successful completion of background checks including motor vehicle record verification.
- Passing of drug tests and adherence to federal Department of Transportation requirements.
- Required safety attire including steel-toe work boots, hard hat, safety glasses, and reflective safety vest.
- Proficiency in operating two-way communication radios.
- Adaptability to work under varying weather conditions and traffic environments.
- Strong communication skills to effectively coordinate with contractors and internal team members, providing excellent customer service.
- Ability to perform well cooperatively within team settings.
- High attendance reliability, dependable transportation, and a dedicated work ethic are essential.
- Completion of the ATSSA Flagger certification course and company-provided Defensive Driving training.
- Willingness to travel within the state, including occasional overnight assignments, and to work nights or weekends as project needs dictate.
- Availability for a rotating on-call schedule to support project demands.
