Job description
Overview
As a Technician specializing in Data Center operations, your role will involve executing designated tasks within the data center environment, including installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of servers and network devices. Responsibilities span across equipment assembly, operational functionality, ongoing upkeep, and maintaining order at assigned project sites.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct weekly inspections on server and storage hardware to identify issues related to hardware or network connectivity; utilize ipmi-sel data and manufacturer-specific platform management logs for diagnostics.
- Troubleshoot connectivity problems affecting servers and storage, including issues related to network transceivers and optical fiber signal quality, following established data center protocols.
- Engage with vendor support teams (e.g., HPE, Dell, IX) by providing collected diagnostics, raising support cases, and tracking repair progress.
- Coordinate with data center operations personnel in managing logistics of equipment repair processes and escort vendor contractors to ensure adherence to operational standards.
- Manage Return Material Authorization procedures for components such as remote Power Distribution Units (rPDUs), network switches, and replaceable hardware units (e.g., power supplies, fans, controllers).
- Support hardware installations, relocations, and configuration changes.
- Dispose of IT hardware including hard drives (HDD/SSD), network gear, servers, storage, and backup systems in line with protocols.
- Perform routine physical and visual assessments of data center facilities and equipment.
- Maintain accurate inventory through regular cycle counts and record-keeping.
- Document structured cabling and materials, particularly during new equipment installations.
- Oversee capacity management related to space, power, cooling, and patch panel port availability.
- Adhere to incident and change management procedures.
- Prepare periodic reports covering moves, changes, support tickets, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Travel lightly between sites as required.
- Undertake additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Skills
- Minimum education: High School diploma or its equivalent; bachelor’s degree in IT Business or related fields is preferred.
- Certifications such as CCNA and CCNP are advantageous.
- At least 2 years of experience working in an enterprise-level data center, with solid knowledge of industry best practices.
- Strong diagnostic abilities for server hardware from leading manufacturers.
- Experience resolving Ethernet network connectivity issues covering both RJ45 copper and LC/MPO fiber uplinks.
- Good comprehension of data cabling systems and patch management.
- Well-developed organizational and communication skills to prioritize multiple tasks effectively.
- Prompt responsiveness to issues and clear communication of updates and escalation when needed.
- Fluency in English is required.
- Valid driver’s license with willingness to travel up to 25%.
- Basic computer literacy preferred.
- Previous experience in Field Service or as a Data Center Technician is beneficial.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
The data center setting is highly secure, operational 24/7/365, and involves rigorous physical demands including noise exposure and controlled temperature conditions. Essential physical activities include lifting weights up to 50 pounds, frequent bending, stooping, climbing ladders, prolonged walking and standing, and hand tool usage.
