Role Overview
Join the Database Reliability Team as a Software Engineer focused on ensuring the reliability and performance of Xero's database platforms. Your responsibilities will be evenly split between developing software and enhancing database reliability by creating internal tools that improve the management and efficiency of the database fleet.
Key Responsibilities
You will monitor system performance, boost observability, and rapidly address production incidents to maintain platform health and resilience. By strengthening the database platform supporting various engineering teams, you will contribute directly to providing a fast, dependable experience for millions of users worldwide.

- Transitioning the database platform from self-managed SQL Server to Amazon RDS and advancing towards PostgreSQL adoption.

- Improving platform observability and performance through performance engineering, load balancing, and resilience optimization.
- Integrating AI technologies into everyday engineering workflows to lift quality and efficiency.

Desired Qualifications and Skills
- Experience with .NET, C#, and AWS or strong backend engineering skills with an agnostic approach to programming languages.
- Practical familiarity with database platforms such as SQL Server, Amazon RDS, or PostgreSQL, alongside enthusiasm for platform engineering growth.
- Proven ability to develop scalable backend tools, maintain clean codebases, and automate manual workflows.
- Strong understanding of system observability, database tuning, and incident response.
- Capability to engineer resilient software solutions while adopting advanced development tools, including AI-based enhancements to optimize workflows.
- A collaborative attitude with eagerness for continuous learning, knowledge sharing, and mentoring team members.
