Role and Impact
Become a vital part of Xero's Database Reliability Team as a Software Engineer specializing in database reliability. This role requires a balanced focus, dedicating around half your time to software development and the other half to maintaining database reliability through building internal tools that enhance the efficiency of managing Xero's database platform.
Your responsibilities include ensuring the database platform remains healthy, resilient, and high-performing by monitoring system metrics, improving observability measures, and proactively addressing production issues before they affect end users. Your contributions will underpin the engineering teams at Xero and provide millions of customers worldwide with a high-quality, reliable experience.
Team Collaboration

Current Initiatives
- Modernizing the database platform by migrating from self-managed SQL Server instances to Amazon RDS, with a future transition towards PostgreSQL.
- Developing and improving internal tools to streamline fleet management, automate tasks, and increase developer productivity.
- Enhancing platform observability and performance engineering to detect bottlenecks, enable load balancing, and boost system resilience.
- Incorporating AI technologies into everyday workflows to improve engineering quality and efficiency.
Work Environment

Candidate Profile
- Experience with .NET, C#, and AWS environments or strong backend software engineering skills with a flexible, language-agnostic approach.
- Knowledgeable in database systems such as SQL Server, Amazon RDS, or PostgreSQL, with enthusiasm to delve deeper into platform engineering.
- Skilled at creating scalable backend tools, writing maintainable code, and automating manual processes.
- Familiar with system observability principles, database performance tuning, and handling live production incidents.
- Ability to engineer robust software solutions and utilize modern development tools, including AI-based utilities to optimize workflows.
- A collaborative attitude motivated by continuous learning, knowledge sharing, and mentorship of colleagues.
