Job description

Overview

The Night Tool Pusher is responsible for managing and overseeing the drilling activities during night shifts, ensuring the well and all related drilling operations are successfully completed. This role requires close coordination with the Offshore Installation Manager (OIM) or deputizing them if necessary, while prioritizing safety of personnel, equipment, and the environment to maximize the efficiency of drilling operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Guarantee safety standards are met for personnel, equipment, and all operations on the drill floor and adjacent drilling areas.
  • Develop and manage plans and schedules for all drilling and related activities, guiding personnel to achieve optimal job outcomes aligned with client expectations.
  • Ensure any deviation from the client's well plan is authorized by the OIM and documented by client representatives.
  • Communicate regularly with the OIM and client representatives about drilling progress and any changes to operational plans, keeping the driller updated about mission objectives.
  • Assume driller duties at the console as operational needs require.
  • Prepare and confirm all equipment readiness for upcoming phases in the drilling or workover programs.
  • Supervise and assist the drilling crew continuously, ensuring adequate circulating time, well stability during trips, drilling assembly work, and effective problem resolution.
  • Operate the drilling rig in close adherence with company manuals and well control procedures, including approval of drilling work permits.
  • Ensure well control protocols are established, supervise well killing operations during control scenarios, and monitor well parameters to detect early signs of issues.
  • Maintain and routinely test well control equipment per company and client requirements to ensure operational readiness.
  • Perform critical well control calculations involved in mud weight adjustments and pressure management.
  • Participate in emergency response teams, ensuring all personnel are trained and drills are conducted and documented according to company policies.
  • Support the OIM by managing inventory of parts and materials for drilling operations and confirm scheduled maintenance of key drilling equipment is conducted and recorded.
  • Prepare the rig for moves by ensuring all equipment is securely fastened by the drilling crew.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with internal departments, third parties, and client reps; respond to client material, equipment, and personnel requests after management approval.
  • Keep accurate operational logs and reports including daily drilling, equipment status, and incident records.
  • Lead, mentor, and train the drilling team, ensuring they understand their duties, safety protocols, and receive ongoing growth opportunities with formal performance reviews and competency assessments.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum education: High School diploma or equivalent technical/vocational certification.
  • At least 15 years’ drilling and workover experience with reputable contractors, including prior roles as Assistant Driller, Driller, and Tool Pusher.
  • At least 2 years’ experience specifically as a Tool Pusher.
  • Proven offshore rig operational experience.

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Proficient intermediate English communication, both written and spoken.
  • Basic computer literacy, familiar with Microsoft Office suite.
  • Strong numerical and mathematical skills related to drilling calculations and practices.
  • Excellent situational awareness, effective communication, teamwork capabilities, and understanding of factors like stress and fatigue affecting performance.

Physical and Certification Requirements

  • Ability to perform physical tasks including climbing stairs and ladders, bending, twisting, and standing for extended periods.
  • Capable of working outdoors in harsh weather conditions encompassing noise, humidity, cold, and heat.
  • Prepared to work shifts of up to 12 hours during night operations.
  • Possession of all certifications listed in the company’s training matrix, including a valid Well Control certificate such as Well Sharp or IADC.
