Role Summary

The position is for a Software Development Manager for Powerpay, a leading cloud payroll solution for Canadian small businesses. This role involves leading a development team focused on creating and improving payroll experiences using Java, Spring Boot, React, and AI-enabled technologies.

Responsibilities

• Lead, mentor, and support software engineers through regular feedback and career development activities while fostering an inclusive and high-achieving team environment.
• Oversee hiring, onboarding, performance management, succession planning, and employee engagement efforts.
• Promote continuous learning and adoption of new engineering methodologies and technologies.
• Manage team delivery of product roadmap objectives, closely collaborating with Product Managers to prioritize tasks aligned with customer and business goals.
• Facilitate Agile ceremonies including sprint planning, backlog grooming, and retrospectives, while driving continuous improvement and resolving delivery challenges.
• Provide technical leadership on architecture, design, development, testing, and deployment ensuring scalable, secure, and high-quality software.
• Develop applications using Java, Spring Boot, React, RESTful APIs, and cloud infrastructures.
• Adhere to best practices in code quality, automation, security, performance, and operational excellence.
• Collaborate with Architecture and Platform teams to ensure solutions align with enterprise standards and strategic vision.
• Drive innovation by integrating AI and Generative AI features to advance product functionality and enhance user experience.
• Encourage experimentation, stay updated with payroll technology trends and execute industry best practices.
• Build effective partnerships across Product, UX, Architecture, Operations, Compliance, and Customer Support to align on objectives and communicate progress and risks clearly.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
• Proven experience managing Agile development teams and delivering enterprise-level SaaS products.
• Strong leadership, communication, stakeholder management, and coaching skills.
• Technical expertise in Java, Spring Boot, React, JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML, CSS, microservices, REST APIs, cloud-native architectures, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Familiarity with cloud platforms such as Azure and AWS.
• Experience in automated testing, monitoring, and DevOps practices.
