Job description

Role Overview and Work Environment

As a Junior Quantitative Researcher at BIT Capital, you will manage alpha signal and risk model development for Europe's top-performing technology investment portfolios. Reporting to the Director of Systematic Strategies & Risk, you will work alongside a tight-knit quant team collaborating closely with Portfolio Management and Fundamental Research.

Primary Responsibilities

  • You will take complete responsibility for the lifecycle of alpha signals and risk models used in highly active, benchmark-independent portfolios focused on technology companies, with portfolio turnover approximately three to four times annually.
  • Conduct rigorous quantitative validation of hypotheses generated by the fundamental research team, retaining only those signals that demonstrate out-of-sample robustness and eliminating unsupported ideas based on empirical data.
  • Divide your time roughly 70% on research activities such as idea generation and backtesting, and around 30% on developing production-quality code for implementing these models into live trading systems.
  • Transform economic theories into practical, testable time-series models incorporating techniques like stationarity testing, autocorrelation, AR, MA, ARIMA models, and regularized regression methods.
  • Develop algorithms using Python, SQL, and AWS infrastructure including Snowflake data warehousing, applying large language models (LLMs) to extract tradeable signals from unstructured alternative data sources.

Candidate Profile

  • Possesses one to two years of full-time experience in quantitative research or data science within investment management, or significant internship experience in these fields during academic studies.
  • Holds a Master’s degree or PhD in mathematics, physics, computer science, statistics, economics, or finance, with outstanding academic results.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in probability theory, regression analysis, time-series methods, and foundational machine learning concepts frequently utilized by the team.
  • Has strong programming capabilities in Python and SQL.
  • Experience leveraging large language models (LLMs) for research purposes, personal investment strategy design, or side projects.
  • Fluent in English for professional communication; German language skills are not required.

Applicant Considerations

  • If you prefer to maintain or monitor pre-existing models rather than develop new ones, this role may not be suitable, as ownership extends from hypothesis through backtest to live deployment.
  • If you seek high-frequency trading or purely systematic quantitative research roles, this position differs by focusing on long-only, quantamental investment approaches integrating both fundamental and systematic analysis.

Personal Attributes

  • Passion for equities, financial markets, and technology sectors.
  • Interest in artificial intelligence with a drive to automate and innovate within your responsibilities.
  • A keen curiosity and a dedication to ongoing learning and self-improvement.
  • Effective collaborator who flourishes in a high-performance, team-oriented setting.
  • Creative thinker comfortable navigating ambiguity and generating novel ideas.

What BIT Capital Offers

  • Opportunity to contribute meaningfully to a successful European asset management firm, influencing a focused, high-conviction technology portfolio.
  • Access to extensive datasets, sophisticated research tools, and proprietary alternative data unavailable at typical asset managers.
  • Work within a motivated and diverse international team of 15 nationalities, characterized by flat hierarchies and direct pathways to management and investors.
  • Immediate ownership of impactful work, significant learning prospects, and a culture fostering transparent and constructive feedback.
