Job description
About the Role
We are seeking an Environmental Technical Officer on a fixed term basis (ending 19 November 2027) to cover parental leave. This role is vital to the Environmental Monitoring Team, where you will provide both administrative and technical assistance in gathering and processing environmental data according to ISO9001:2008 standards. Your focus will include supporting scientific monitoring, enhancing environmental monitoring programs, aiding project leads, and occasionally participating in the 24-hour Flood Warning service.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with implementing scientific environmental monitoring and investigative projects.
- Contribute to continuous improvements and efficient functioning of environmental monitoring initiatives.
- Offer technical and administrative support to project leaders.
- Support the 24-hour Flood Warning service as needed.
Candidate Profile and Requirements
- Relevant qualification such as a degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, or a related field.
- 2 to 3 years of experience in environmental data collection and processing.
- Strong numerical and analytical skills.
- Proficient with computing tools, including spreadsheets, geographic information systems (GIS), and statistical applications.
- Familiarity with environmental database management systems.
- High attention to detail and data accuracy.
- Possession of a full, current driver's license including the ability to drive manual vehicles.
- Capability and willingness to work both in office settings and field environments under all weather conditions.
- Physical fitness with swimming ability is required.
- Methodical and precise work approach.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Integrity, honesty, and ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Good judgment and initiative-taking ability.
- Strong communication and customer service skills to interact effectively with council members and other staff.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.

Remuneration and Application
The starting salary range for this position is NZD 78,570 to NZD 82,935 per year. Applications close on 13 September 2026.

Minimum education
Bachelor's Degree
