Role Summary
Located in Singapore, the Conflicts Attorney will manage all aspects of conflicts clearance for incoming clients, new cases, and switching attorneys. This position involves daily evaluation of conflict issues relating to firm acceptance of clients, new cases, lateral attorney hires, and coordination with partners concerning approvals. Additional responsibilities include assignments from the General Counsel and Legal Operations.
Key Duties
- Examine conflict of interest reports for firm representations and lateral hires to detect potential conflicts and ensure compliance with firm policies.
- Address conflicts by obtaining waivers and drafting ethics wall memoranda related to new client, matter, and attorney clearances.
- Review new matter requests and draft engagement letters for adherence to firm policies and professional responsibility rules.
- Maintain proactive communication with partners and management on complex conflict matters.
- Evaluate client outside counsel guidelines and assist in assessing the firm's capacity to comply.
- Oversee Resolution Analysts’ clearance procedures.
- Conduct orientations on the new matter approval protocol for staff and attorneys.
- Collaborate with partners and committees to establish and maintain effective screening and restriction measures.
- Keep comprehensive and accurate records of conflict resolutions and communications.
- Develop specialized knowledge of conflict rules in specific practice areas and create templates and analytical frameworks for conflict issues.
- Perform corporate research as needed.
- Execute other related tasks as assigned.
Qualifications and Skills
- Familiarity with conflict-of-interest principles derived from professional responsibility regulations across jurisdictions.
- Experience analyzing conflicts of interest and relevant legal standards.
- Working knowledge of legal technology platforms such as Intapp, D&B Hoovers, Capital IQ, and Bureau van Dijk.
- Strong verbal and written communication with attorneys and staff.
- Ability to organize, prioritize, and manage workload in a dynamic environment meeting stringent deadlines.
- Adaptability to shifting priorities while maintaining productivity and focus.
- Critical and creative thinking skills to interpret varied information sources and resolve complex problems with accuracy and sound judgment.
- Excellent analytical, interpersonal, and organizational capabilities.
- Methodical and detail-oriented work approach combined with consistency and effective decision-making.
- Technological proficiency, especially with conflict clearance and ethical screening software preferred.
- Capacity to quickly learn new systems and contribute to their design based on department and firm needs.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and manage competing deadlines with complete attention to outstanding matters.
Experience
- Qualification as a lawyer or solicitor is required.
- At least three years of relevant experience in a conflicts department as a solicitor or lawyer.
