Job Summary
This role supports Carpenters by assisting with journeyman-level tasks, including laying out, assembling, and helping with complex carpentry activities. Helpers develop an understanding of relevant mathematical applications and learn to safely and correctly use various hand and power tools along with equipment pertinent to the craft.
Key Responsibilities
- Construct, fabricate, install, and dismantle formwork made from metal, wood, and other materials.
- Build or reinforce forms and bracing before concrete pours.
- Create frameworks for expansion joints and edges using edging tools and jointers.
- Verify structural accuracy using transit, plumb bob, square, and level.
- Operate carpentry hand tools, such as hammers, screwdrivers, saws, drills, levels, and pry bars.
- Level, smooth, and shape freshly poured concrete surfaces with straight edges, floats, or power screeds.
- Nail cleats across boards to assemble concrete-supporting forms.
- Assist in preparing layout plans for form or fixture fabrication using lines or grades.
- Help erect handrails, walkways, and gangways alongside formwork construction.
- Mix cement or epoxy grouts using mixing machines or manual tools.
- Signal concrete delivery trucks to position effectively for pouring.
- Load, transport, and unload tools, equipment, and materials safely.
- Interpret flat drawings or diagrams to visualize three-dimensional objects.
- Perform tasks with precision and accuracy.
- Operate electric and pneumatic tools.
- Carry out minor maintenance and cleaning of tools and equipment.
- Assist in tying rebar as needed.
- Demonstrate adherence to company core values and principles.
- Follow the company code of conduct diligently.
- Participate actively in safety procedures, refuse unsafe work, and report hazards or incidents.
- Maintain personal protective equipment and promote workplace safety.
- Attend all safety meetings and contribute suggestions for improvements.
- Perform other duties assigned by field supervision as required.
Qualifications and Experience Levels
- Level IV: Minimum 36 months of heavy industrial carpenter experience; other verified certifications or experience accepted.
- Level III: 24 to 35 months of heavy industrial carpenter experience.
- Level II: 12 to 23 months of heavy industrial carpenter experience.
- Level I: 0 to 11 months of heavy industrial carpenter experience; at least 1 year in industrial environment.
Requirements
- Ability to read and comprehend instructions and technical documentation.
- Possession of personal hand tools as specified by the company’s industrial minimum tool list.
- Completion of required safety training courses, including Confined Space, Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO), and Working at Heights.
Physical Demands
- Ability to work in all weather conditions and varying temperatures.
- Comfortable working at different elevations, sometimes requiring safety harnesses at 4 feet or more.
- Exposure to dusty, windy environments and moderate to high noise levels.
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, squatting, climbing, and lifting up to 25 pounds.
- Use of hands and arms for handling materials and signaling.
- Good auditory and visual abilities for safe communication and environmental awareness.
