Assistant Chief Engineer

Job Summary

The Assistant Chief Engineer supports the department head in overseeing the budget, capital spending, preventative maintenance, and energy-saving initiatives. This role is responsible for preserving the building and grounds with a focus on safety, security, and asset protection. The assistant assigns, monitors, and follows up on tasks delegated to staff and contractors, while contributing to heightened guest and employee satisfaction through effective communication and training.

Candidate Profile

• Minimum of 5 years experience managing engineering and maintenance functions, preferably with technical background in HVAC-R, electrical systems, or plumbing.
• Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in fields such as Building and Construction, Engineering, Mechanics, or a related discipline.

Core Responsibilities

• Oversee distribution and tracking of repair work orders.
• Ensure consistent and fair application of property policies.
• Assist in planning, scheduling, and evaluating preventative maintenance programs.
• Foster collaborative relationships with employees.
• Monitor timely and quality completion of maintenance tasks.
• Lead engineering and related departments during the Director of Engineering's absence.
• Manage physical plant operations including equipment, refrigeration, HVAC, plumbing, water treatment, electrical, and life safety systems.
• Maintain open communication to align staff with business goals, expectations, and performance recognition.
• Recommend or coordinate additional services such as repairs, renovations, painting, and replacement of furnishings and equipment.
• Select and procure new equipment, supplies, and furnishings.
• Supervise daily operations of engineering and related teams.

Maintenance and Safety

• Inspect and assess facility conditions to identify required work.
• Maintain accurate logs and records.
• Operate generators and fire pumps as needed.
• Provide emergency response coverage 24/7.
• Repair equipment including refrigeration and laundry machinery.
• Ensure staff have appropriate supplies, tools, and uniforms.

Customer Service Excellence

• Empower employees to deliver excellent guest service.
• Emphasize guest satisfaction during departmental meetings and promote continuous improvement.
• Model positive guest relations behavior.

Human Resources and Training

• Assist in employee safety training.
• Support onboarding and orientation programs for new hires.
• Clearly communicate performance expectations following job descriptions.
• Ensure disciplinary processes and documentation comply with standard and local operating procedures.
• Participate in interviewing and hiring to find candidates with appropriate skills.
• Contribute to performance appraisal processes with constructive feedback.
• Utilize on-the-job training tools and solicit employee input.
• Manage staffing levels to meet guest service, operational, and financial goals.
