About Synthesia
Synthesia is a leading AI video platform utilized by over 90% of Fortune 100 companies. Founded in 2017 and headquartered in London, it operates teams across Europe and the US. The company focuses on developing AI-powered solutions for enhanced visual communication and enterprise skill development, supporting better workplace outcomes. Having recently secured $200 million in Series E funding, Synthesia’s valuation now stands at $4 billion, with total investments surpassing $530 million from top-tier investors.
Role Overview
This role involves managing and expanding the Application Security (AppSec) team to address increasingly complex security challenges within a rapidly growing engineering and research environment. The AppSec team focuses on embedding security into the development lifecycle at scale and building AI-native security tools. The manager will lead senior, highly autonomous engineers, driving strategy and ensuring alignment as the product organization scales, especially with AI-assisted development.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and nurture the AppSec team, including hiring, onboarding, performance management, and career development, fostering an environment that empowers the team rather than dictating their agenda.
- Develop and maintain the AppSec strategy and roadmap, integrating input from the team, business risk considerations, and engineering context into prioritized, measurable initiatives.
- Serve as a technically credible partner, engaging deeply with threat modeling, security architecture, agentic tooling design, and application risk assessments.
- Establish and sustain the team’s operating rhythm using OKRs, quarterly planning, inter-team coordination, and transparent communication to leadership.
- Build strong relationships across business leadership, engineering, platform teams, architecture groups, and partner functions like legal and moderation to embed security throughout the company.
- Drive advancements in securing AI-assisted development, including safeguarding agentic coding tools and evaluating AI-generated code security.
- Ensure close coordination between AppSec and broader security teams regarding shared risks, incidents, and initiatives.
- Represent AppSec externally, engaging with customers, auditors, and compliance programs such as SOC2 and ISO42001.
Experience & Qualifications
- Proven security engineering background with leadership experience, able to balance hands-on technical involvement with organizational and strategic oversight.
- Strong communication skills enabling effective interaction across technical teams and leadership, and negotiation with cross-functional partners.
- Expertise in application security, including threat modeling, secure design reviews, SAST/SCA tools, vulnerability management, and security automation.
- Proficiency with Python, JavaScript, cloud platforms (AWS and/or GCP), and GitHub Actions.
- Demonstrated experience in hiring, developing, and managing senior security engineers.
- Experience scaling AppSec in dynamic SaaS or AI environments where rapid engineering growth outpaces security resources.
- Deep understanding of AI-native security challenges, including the impact of large language models and agentic tools on attack surfaces and defensive applications.
- Familiarity with mature engineering cultures and integrating security collaboratively rather than as a gatekeeper.
Bonus Skills
- Knowledge of Kubernetes operations and security.
- Experience with tools like Semgrep, Wiz, CrowdStrike, HackerOne, Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Actions, and StepSecurity.
- Prior roles as Staff or Principal Security Engineer before transitioning into management.
Key Values
- Ownership and accountability.
- Prioritizing outcomes over plans or inputs.
- Maintaining an enjoyable and straightforward work experience.
Benefits & Work Environment
- Flexible, remote-friendly work arrangement based in Europe or from hubs in London, Copenhagen, Munich, or Zurich.
- 25 days of paid annual leave plus local public holidays.
- Attractive referral bonuses.
- Support for home office setup.
- Ability to work remotely worldwide for up to 60 days annually.
- Significant opportunities for career progression by contributing to a cutting-edge AI-driven product.
Additional Information
The position requires adherence to the Infosec Team Management Tenets when managing within the security organization.
