Position Overview
The Staff Software Engineer will join Twilio's Voice Connectivity Trust team, focusing on enhancing support for customers integrating Voice technologies. The role involves full lifecycle software development—from gathering requirements with product managers to design, estimation, implementation, testing, deployment, and ongoing support. The engineer will also manage services in production environments that require distributed architectures and adopt agile practices for continuous delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Take ownership by designing and building real-time, high-throughput, low-latency services, deploying and operating them effectively.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to grasp customer needs, producing simple, scalable, and robust solutions tailored to those requirements.
- Communicate ideas clearly through thorough written documentation to facilitate collaboration among leads, architects, and cross-functional teams.
- Navigate the complexities of scaling a globally distributed platform emphasizing high availability, reliability, performance, and media quality.
- Innovate by developing novel approaches to tackle customer challenges on the Voice channel.
Qualifications
Required:
- At least 8 years of practical experience developing large-scale distributed applications utilizing JVM technologies.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or an equivalent engineering discipline.
- Strong fundamentals in computer science including data structures, algorithms, operating systems, and distributed systems.
- Experience designing and implementing RESTful services, APIs, and event-driven systems using Kafka, SQS, or similar technologies.
- Hands-on expertise optimizing continuous integration and continuous delivery pipelines.
- Experience participating in on-call rotations, incident handling, and using monitoring tools such as Prometheus, Datadog, and Grafana.
- Familiarity with cloud environments like AWS, GCP, OpenStack, or Azure.
- Excellent technical writing skills, enabling effective communication and AI-assisted documentation.
- Capability to critically assess AI-generated code for security, performance, correctness, and maintainability.
- Strong Java programming skills, including architecture, code review, and debugging of self-authored, peer, or AI-generated code.
- Proven experience with AI coding support tools such as Claude, GitHub Copilot, or Cursor, with ability to articulate workflow benefits.
- Experience scaling data storage layers using various SQL/NoSQL databases and caching solutions.
- Demonstrated ability to build backend systems that scale horizontally, remain resilient, and perform reliably under load.
- Collaborative team player motivated to lead and inspire peers.
- Technical leadership experience, including driving architectural decisions, spearheading cross-functional projects, and mentoring colleagues.
Desired:
- Track record of leveraging AI to enhance efficiency and value delivery in software development.
- Knowledge of SIP and Stir/Shaken protocols is a plus.
Location and Travel
This position is remote based in Ireland, with occasional requirements for onsite meetings, team gatherings, or customer engagements.
