Job description
Position Overview
Timmons Group is seeking a skilled Underground Utility Locator to join our Survey Group at the Newport News, VA office. This role involves both in-office and field work for ideal candidates. The primary responsibility is to assist the survey crew by accurately locating and marking underground utilities on diverse projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Use electromagnet and other geophysical tools to proficiently identify underground utilities.
- Mark all types of utility lines, both conductive and non-conductive, including water, sewer, gas, electric, fiber optic, PVC, and other underground infrastructure impacting excavation.
- Flag utilities with paint or markers and prepare sketches documenting findings for client reference.
- Potentially learn to establish survey control and locate utility markings using survey technology such as robotic total stations and RTK GPS systems.
- Manage maintenance of survey tools, supplies, and vehicles.
- Work effectively within a team and occasionally perform independent tasks.
Candidate Requirements
- High school diploma or GED, coupled ideally with five years of Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) designation experience and field surveying background.
- Solid knowledge of ASCE 38-02 standards and application of quality levels.
- Preferred experience working with robotic total stations, GPS, and data collection equipment.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance.
- Basic AutoCAD skills considered advantageous.
- Valid North Carolina driver's license with a clean driving record.
- Willingness to travel occasionally.
Compensation and Benefits
The estimated salary range is $21 to $28 per hour, with eligibility for overtime pay. Offers are determined considering relevant experience, skills, education, and complexity of the role. A comprehensive benefits package is provided.
