Job description
Role Overview
The Northern Territory Department of Corrections is inviting applications for multiple full-time positions as Trainee Correctional Officers across Darwin, Alice Springs, Tennant Creek, and Katherine. This important role supports the community and criminal justice system by ensuring safety and security within correctional facilities and helping facilitate prisoner rehabilitation.
Training and Salary Details
Candidates will undergo an intensive 11-week paid training program, which consists of eight weeks of off-the-job instruction followed by three weeks of practical on-the-job training. The training includes completing the nationally accredited CSC30122 Certificate III in Correctional Practice, with all associated costs sponsored by the Department.
During training, salary progression is as follows:
- First 8 weeks: Base salary of $62,167 plus 12% superannuation ($69,627 total package)
- Weeks 9 to 11 (shadow phase): $62,167 base salary plus 40% consolidated allowance ($24,867) and 12% superannuation, totaling $97,478
- Post-training (after week 11): Base salary increases to $69,074 plus 40% allowance ($26,825) and 12% superannuation, totaling $108,308
Following the 12-month training period which includes performance evaluations and assessments, successful trainees may receive offers for permanent employment.
Job Responsibilities
- Oversee and manage prisoners to maintain secure and humane environments
- Implement security procedures ensuring safety of staff, visitors, and inmates
- Conduct prisoner escorts and respond appropriately to emergencies
Requirements and Eligibility
- Must hold Australian or New Zealand citizenship, or be a permanent resident; suitable visas with full work rights may allow fixed-term contracts
- Possess strong communication, organizational skills, and demonstrate good character
- Physically fit with the ability to operate in diverse, cross-cultural environments
- Current First Aid Certificate required
- Hold a Northern Territory "C" class driver's license and be capable of driving manual transmission vehicles before starting
