Tools Specialist

Job Overview

We are seeking an experienced Press Tool Specialist responsible for the assembly, upkeep, troubleshooting, and repair of stage and progressive press tools. This role involves supporting production processes, setting up feeders, ensuring component quality, and minimizing downtime through preventive maintenance and rapid issue resolution.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Assemble, dismantle, and commission stage and progressive press tools.
• Conduct preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on press tools.
• Diagnose tool faults and implement repair or rework activities on components like punches, dies, springs, and guide pillars.
• Maintain detailed tool history records and suggest enhancements to prolong tool life.
• Support production by operating sheet metal stamping processes, including feeder setup and trial runs for smooth starts.
• Coordinate with production teams during tool changes and troubleshooting to minimize rejects and maximize output.
• Set up and align pneumatic or servo feeders, adjusting settings like feed length, pilot release, and decoiler to ensure smooth strip feeding without misfeeds.
• Verify press tool alignment and machine settings prior to commencing production runs.
• Investigate common tool issues such as burrs, dimensional inconsistencies, punch breakage, misfeeds, jamming, and tool wear; perform root cause analysis and implement corrective actions.
• Inspect components during initial and ongoing production using measuring devices like vernier calipers, micrometers, and dial indicators compliant with GD&T and tolerance standards.
• Maintain 5S practices, workplace safety, and document all tool room maintenance activities thoroughly.

Qualifications and Experience

• Diploma in Tool & Die Engineering or Mechanical Engineering; ITI (Tool & Die Maker) with substantial relevant experience may also be considered.
• 12 to 15 years of hands-on involvement in sheet metal stamping, press tools, and tool room activities.

Skills and Competencies

• Proficient knowledge of stage and progressive press tools and their assembly and maintenance.
• Deep understanding of sheet metal stamping operations and feeder setup/troubleshooting.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering and tool assembly drawings accurately.
• Familiarity with tool steels, heat treatment, wear mechanisms, and quality inspection instruments.
• Basic grasp of hydraulic and pneumatic press systems.
• Strong problem-solving, analytical skills, and the capability to work under production pressures independently.
• Effective communication and teamwork abilities.

Preferred Expertise

• Experience working with presses from 25T to 200T, brands like AIDA, SEYI, Chin Fong, or equivalents.
• Exposure to stamping materials such as copper, brass, stainless steel, and mild steel.
• Knowledge of manufacturing improvement practices including TPM, Kaizen, Lean Manufacturing, and 5S.
• Basic computer skills including MS Excel, maintenance record keeping, and ERP systems.
• Understanding safety protocols related to power presses and tool room operations.
