About the Role
Become a part of an important community initiative dedicated to assisting vulnerable individuals recovering from suicide attempts. This full-time, permanent position is located in Cairns North, Queensland, within the The Way Back Support Service (TWBSS), which provides compassionate, practical after-care for people discharged from hospital following such crises. The goal is to lower suicide risk through coordinated, person-focused support fostering safety, hope, and connection.
As a Support Coordinator, you will collaborate with individuals and their families referred by North Queensland Primary Health Network (NQPHN) and Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service (C&HHHS), delivering non-clinical, recovery-centered assistance during the critical first three months after a suicide attempt.
Key Responsibilities
- Offer recovery-focused, non-clinical support in the immediate post-suicide attempt period.
- Develop and apply tailored safety and support plans for participants.
- Coordinate care and link individuals to vital community and clinical services.
- Encourage social connectivity and empower engagement in personal recovery journeys.
- Travel extensively within the Cairns and Hinterland community to fulfil duties.
Candidate Profile
You should be compassionate, proactive, and confident in engaging with individuals undergoing mental health crises, aiding them in navigating available supports. A sound understanding of suicide prevention and mental health recovery is essential, alongside strong interpersonal communication skills and the capacity to work autonomously and collaboratively.
Required Experience and Qualifications
- Proven experience working with people facing mental health issues or suicide risk.
- Relevant qualifications or equivalent experience in supporting individuals with mental health conditions.
- Knowledge of recovery and strengths-based principles.
- Valid Australian work rights, National Police Records Check, Blue and Yellow Cards.
- Driver's license with willingness to travel within the region.
- Completion of the NDIS Worker Orientation Module Certificate (Quality Safety and You).
Employment Details and Benefits
- Remuneration at SCHADS Level 4B ($46.70 to $50.25 per hour) plus salary packaging options and leave loading.
