Staff Engineer, Compute

Role Overview

As a Staff Engineer within the Compute – Disruption and Workload Placement group at Datadog, you will guide the scaling of our Kubernetes environment to support fast-growing AI and cloud-native applications. You will develop systems that ensure adequate compute resources are allocated across AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure regions to meet evolving demands. This position requires strategic technical leadership to direct capacity orchestration and architect resilient infrastructure supporting Datadog's expansion.

Key Responsibilities

• Drive the engineering vision for capacity governance and workload distribution across a Kubernetes cluster comprised of over 100,000 virtual machines distributed among multiple cloud platforms.
• Create solutions that optimize geographic and capacity-based workload scheduling balancing efficiency, reliability, and performance.
• Collaborate with infrastructure teams to enhance multi-region and multi-cloud orchestration scalable to organizational growth.
• Develop production-level software primarily in the Go programming language to augment Kubernetes platform functionality, automation capabilities, and operational effectiveness.
• Analyze data trends and capacity metrics to guide infrastructure growth planning and refine workload placement policies.

Candidate Profile

• Extensive expertise in architecting and managing large-scale Kubernetes-based infrastructure or platform ecosystems.
• Proficient software engineer with strong coding ability in Go or similar system-level languages.
• Experience working hands-on with at least one major public cloud provider such as AWS, Google Cloud, or Microsoft Azure, with a thorough understanding of distributed cloud infrastructures.
• Possess a systems-centric mindset with enthusiasm for tackling challenging issues around infrastructure, scheduling, and capacity management.
• Comfortable working with operational datasets and using forecasting and analytics to inform technical decisions.
• Demonstrated capability to lead technically across teams and shape architectural strategies without formal managerial power.
