Role Overview

As a Staff Backend Engineer in the Foundations team, you will be instrumental in building the core user and organisation management systems that underpin the platform. This includes user creation, identification, authentication, organisation structuring, and management at scale. You will define the architecture and canonical data models, oversee the migration from legacy platforms without affecting users, and collaborate across product and engineering teams to minimize fragmentation and enforce secure, standardized patterns. Your work will support scalability to serve millions of users.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain large-scale SaaS and cloud services, including distributed systems, data stores, and event-driven components.
• Own the user management architecture covering lifecycle, organisational memberships, provisioning, and authentication flows such as login, signup, multi-factor authentication (MFA), and single sign-on (SSO).
• Define the unified user and organisation data models to eliminate fragmentation and accelerate feature delivery.
• Lead incremental, backward-compatible migrations from legacy user and identity systems using staged cutovers.
• Make architectural decisions across teams and communicate them clearly to stakeholders.
• Drive technology strategy aligning engineering choices with customer and business outcomes.
• Manage delivery of complex features with realistic estimations and ensure safe, repeatable releases.
• Establish patterns and platforms enabling multiple teams to operate independently with autonomy but maintain consistency, reliability, and performance.
• Promote a culture of constructive feedback, continuous improvement, mentorship, and maintain high standards of design and code quality.
• Share domain knowledge broadly to ensure sustainability of critical user management systems.

Candidate Profile

• Expertise in backend programming languages such as Golang, Node.js, or similar frameworks with a history of building reliable, maintainable services.
• Proven experience designing and operating scalable SaaS or cloud services, ideally with microservice or service-oriented architectures.
• Strong knowledge of user management, identity, and access control at platform scale including user and organisation modelling, provisioning, lifecycle, and authentication standards like SSO, OpenID Connect, OAuth, SAML, and MFA.
• Experience creating multi-tenant systems capable of handling user and organisation boundaries under heavy scale and dynamic change.
• Track record of executing smooth migrations off legacy systems without disrupting users, employing dual-write, backward compatibility, and phased rollouts.
• Ability to guide teams in data architecture to enable high-throughput, scalable system design.
• Skilled in addressing scale challenges in high-traffic systems such as membership resolution, search, and data access for large user bases.
• Demonstrated leadership on complex, high-impact projects spanning multiple teams with defined customer and business benefits.
• Experience in technical leadership roles influencing architecture, quality, and engineering processes across teams without formal authority.
• Capable of balancing effort versus impact to facilitate pragmatic decision-making among teams and stakeholders.
• High-leverage approach focusing on accelerating others, reducing complexity, and enhancing system-wide results over individual coding output.
• Strong mentoring and coaching ability with a history of raising engineering standards and fostering growth in others.
