Role Overview

We are looking for a seasoned Software Engineering Manager to join our Auckland engineering team. This hybrid position requires a balance of approximately 50% hands-on software engineering and 50% leadership of a cross-functional squad. You will actively write and review code, guide architectural decisions, and uphold technical standards while mentoring your team.

IDEXX is heavily investing in veterinary software with the goal of creating the first fully integrated vertical SaaS platform for animal health. Our Auckland office serves as our global Software Centre of Excellence, designing, building, and running cloud-native platforms that support veterinary professionals globally.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead by example through active coding and feature delivery while maintaining rigorous automated testing standards.
  • Design and document complex, scalable, secure software architecture for large-scale systems.
  • Conduct senior-level code reviews to ensure high-quality, maintainable software reaches production.
  • Drive engineering excellence and participate in technology strategy discussions impacting the platform.
  • Mentor and develop engineers, fostering professional growth through coaching and feedback.
  • Create an inclusive, psychologically safe environment that encourages open communication and collaboration.
  • Set clear individual performance goals, monitor progress, and support career development.
  • Help recruit and retain top engineering talent aligned with IDEXX values and technological needs.
  • Promote a culture of ownership and accountability, ensuring teams understand the impact of their work.
  • Collaborate closely with product, architecture, and engineering leadership to align on goals and priorities.
  • Optimize delivery processes to improve efficiency, minimize work in progress, and manage stakeholder expectations.
  • Lead continuous improvements in engineering processes and foster the evolution of IDEXX’s engineering standards.
  • Champion agentic coding and AI-assisted development to innovate the software development lifecycle.

Required Qualifications

  • Over seven years of experience as a software engineer with a proven record of technical delivery in modern environments.
  • Demonstrated leadership and mentoring skills while remaining an active contributor to codebases.
  • Experience improving engineering culture, agility, automated testing, and DevSecOps practices.
  • Deep knowledge of cloud-native architectures, distributed systems, and contemporary software design.
  • Proficiency in technologies such as React, Go, TypeScript, .NET, Ruby, or Java, including code review and architectural influence.
  • Experience working in Agile methodologies like Scrum, Kanban, or hybrid models.
  • Prior work in scaled SaaS environments is advantageous.
