Senior Database Administrator

Overview

We are looking for a seasoned Senior Database Administrator / Database Systems Engineer to oversee and maintain relational databases campus-wide, spanning production, instructional, development, and enterprise environments. The ideal candidate must bring extensive knowledge of Oracle Database, Microsoft SQL Server, and PostgreSQL with practical hands-on experience handling database administration, tuning, security, backup and recovery, disaster recovery, data warehousing, ETL workflows, data integration, and business intelligence systems.

Primary Duties

• Manage campus-wide relational databases that support diverse systems including production, instructional, development, and enterprise operations.
• Install, set up, update, monitor, and maintain various database management systems.
• Support Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, and PostgreSQL platforms with routine and emergency administration.
• Ensure databases run on the latest stable and supported software versions.
• Maintain consistent availability, integrity, security, and optimal performance of databases.

Database Structure and Security

• Create and manage database components such as schemas, tables, tablespaces, indexes, views, queries, stored procedures, user roles, and profiles.
• Enforce and monitor database access control and security policies.
• Regularly scrutinize audit and activity logs to uphold security compliance.

Performance Management

• Regularly diagnose and troubleshoot database system issues.
• Implement performance tuning and optimization strategies, analyzing resource usage and adjusting accordingly.
• Manage the placement and organization of critical files including system executables, redo logs, data files, application data, and index files.
• Monitor disk space and storage utilization to support capacity planning and infrastructure optimization.

Backup, Recovery and Availability

• Design and uphold enterprise-wide backup and recovery strategies.
• Maintain disaster recovery and business continuity plans to ensure rapid restoration of service.
• Perform regular recovery testing to validate backup effectiveness and data integrity.

Data Warehousing and Integration

• Plan, build, and maintain enterprise data warehouses and marts tailored for reporting and BI needs.
• Design and manage ETL processes using appropriate tools.
• Support business intelligence reporting including development and maintenance of Power BI reports.
• Ensure smooth data integration between enterprise database systems and third-party applications.

Data Modeling and Development

• Create data models and entity-relationship diagrams that align with business requirements.
• Modify or enhance database objects such as tables, fields, indexes, stored procedures, and views in support of application upgrades or new features.
• Work closely with software development teams to align database design with application needs.

Security and Compliance

• Develop policies for data integrity and govern access controls meticulously.
• Continuously monitor audit logs and investigate suspicious activities.
• Ensure compliance with organizational data security standards to protect enterprise data assets.

Storage Management and Troubleshooting

• Manage disk space and storage allocation essential for database installation and ongoing operation.
• Optimize file placement to maximize efficiency and storage utilization.
• Investigate and resolve database and related system issues promptly, maintaining high availability of enterprise systems.

Innovation and Emerging Technologies

• Stay updated on advancements in AI, including generative AI solutions applicable to database management and analytics.
• Assess and implement new technologies that could enhance database operation and reporting capabilities.

Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, or equivalent accredited field.
• 6 to 8 years of experience in academic/research application development and database system management.
• Proven expertise in installing, configuring, tuning, and managing Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, and PostgreSQL databases.
• Robust experience in database backup, recovery, disaster recovery, business continuity, security, performance tuning, capacity planning, data modeling, ETL, and data integration.
