Senior Applied Scientist - Logistics Algorithms

Overview

Join Zalando as a Senior Applied Scientist and lead algorithm-driven, research-based software development within our logistics team. Working at the intersection of combinatorial optimization and data science, you will improve warehouse efficiency by solving complex stochastic optimization problems. Our systems process millions of orders weekly, making critical decisions in scheduling, planning, and routing inside our warehouses.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design and research of algorithms and predictive models tailored to logistics challenges.
• Develop end-to-end solutions including research, prototyping, production software implementation, testing, and maintaining high availability systems.
• Shape our R&D practices to support scalable, data-driven architectures.
• Mentor and support applied scientists by sharing expertise in applied research.

Qualifications

• Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related quantitative discipline.
• Industry experience in developing algorithm-related software using Java, Kotlin, Python, or similar languages.
• Proficient with advanced algorithm techniques such as combinatorics, graph theory, control theory, or expertise in mathematical modeling methods like operations research, statistics, or experimentation.
• Experience with machine learning approaches including forecasting and Bayesian networks.
• At least six years of applied research experience, demonstrating the ability to convert practical business problems into mathematical models independently.
• Strong collaboration skills within agile and cross-functional teams involving engineers, product owners, and fellow scientists.
