Job description
About Proton
Founded in 2014 by CERN scientists, Proton is built on the principle that privacy is a basic human right. The company has developed the largest encrypted email platform globally and expanded its portfolio to include Proton VPN, Drive, Pass, and Calendar. These privacy-centered tools are utilized worldwide to safeguard freedom, combat censorship, and protect sensitive data. Proton is profitable, independently operated without venture capital influence, and employs a selective recruitment strategy focusing on top talent globally.
Role Overview
As a Senior Android Software Engineer based in London, you will be part of high-impact teams working across products such as Proton Drive, Payments, and Account. Your contributions will help create privacy-first Android applications used by millions. You will employ modern technologies like Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, and an increasingly shared Rust core to build secure and user-friendly applications. Taking full ownership of your work, you will help shape the definition of exceptional privacy-centric consumer applications at scale.
Key Responsibilities and Qualifications
- Design, develop, and deliver high-quality Android applications using Kotlin and Jetpack Compose.
- Ensure product quality and exceptional user experience by employing modern development best practices.
- Own features end-to-end from conception, technical design, implementation, to refinement.
- Build maintainable, scalable, and testable software architectures suitable for large-scale mobile products.
- Collaborate effectively across teams managing complex codebases.
- Mentor other engineers and elevate team technical standards.
- Understand and optimize performance aspects including concurrency, multithreading, memory management, caching, network efficiency, responsiveness, and offline capabilities.
- Navigating product and technical ambiguities to contribute meaningfully to discussions.
- Experience with privacy, security, encryption, synchronization systems, or offline-first designs is strongly preferred.
- Rust programming experience is advantageous but not mandatory, as the company is integrating a platform-independent Rust core behind Android interfaces.
Benefits and Work Environment
- Meaningful work impacting millions while prioritizing user privacy over external interests.
- Equity opportunities through stock options providing ownership in the company.
- Provision of appropriate hardware and software tools to maximize productivity.
- Strong emphasis on career growth supported by real ownership and challenges from day one.
- Comprehensive health coverage, retirement plans, generous leave policies, and wellness programs.
- Collaborative in-person office culture in London and other global locations fostering teamwork and innovation.
- Daily lunches and snacks at the office to support focus and energy.
- Transportation coverage including public transit, biking, or parking allowances.
- Flexible work schedules allowing you to manage your time to meet outcomes effectively.
Diversity and Inclusion
Proton is dedicated to fostering diversity and inclusivity within its workforce, encouraging candidates from all backgrounds to apply. Reasonable adjustments during the hiring process are supported upon request.
Privacy and Candidate Information
