Position Overview
This role is based in a school environment within the Richmond County School System and entails custodial and grounds maintenance duties under general supervision. The position is non-contractual and non-exempt, reporting directly to the school principal. It involves performing manual tasks related to general cleaning, sanitation, and upkeep of school properties.
Work Schedule
The custodian position works either 200 days (10 months) or 235 days (12 months) annually, aligning with the school calendar.
Educational & Certification Requirements
A minimum of eighth-grade education is required, though a high school diploma or GED is preferred. No specific certifications or licenses are mandated to fulfill the job responsibilities.
Skills & Knowledge
- Familiarity with building and grounds maintenance techniques, materials, and equipment.
- Competency in operating custodial machinery such as auto scrubbers and burnishers.
- Proper use of personal protective equipment and adherence to safety protocols.
- Understanding of emergency response procedures and occupational safety health regulations.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Maintain a positive and professional demeanor and dress appropriately for a school environment.
- Perform cleaning tasks including ceilings, chalkboards, counters, lockers, and various other surfaces.
- Adhere strictly to all regulatory and safety requirements.
- Work independently and efficiently, managing time well even with frequent interruptions and changing needs.
- Support school personnel by delivering items to classrooms, relocating furniture, and handling other physical tasks.
- Ensure the overall cleanliness and upkeep of the school building and its grounds.
- Use cleaning chemicals and handle waste safely, following all regulatory guidelines.
- Manage inventory and ordering of cleaning supplies and oversee the maintenance of the supply budget.
- Operate lawn maintenance equipment like power mowers and clean outdoor areas.
- Utilize various cleaning equipment and maintenance tools such as ladders and basic hand tools.
- Perform floor care duties including dusting, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, scrubbing, and buffing in varied school areas.
- Clean and maintain walls, light fixtures, blinds, windows, restrooms, clinic areas, water fountains, and replace light bulbs as needed.
- Responsible for correctly opening and closing school buildings, following district protocols.
- Follow school community procedures and systems to carry out duties.
- Perform other tasks as assigned by supervisors or in accordance with school policies and regulations to ensure efficient school operations.
Work Environment and Physical Demands
The working conditions resemble those experienced by typical custodial roles. Noise levels are usually moderate. The position requires occasional lifting/moving of items up to 25 pounds, frequently standing, walking, sitting, talking, and hearing. Physical strength is necessary to lift/move heavy furniture or equipment (at least 50 pounds) and perform repetitive manual labor with exposure to potential accident hazards and discomfort.
Additional Information
- Occasional overtime or nighttime work may be required.
- Applicants with relevant certifications may be assigned to operate heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems.
