Job Overview
The Roustabout performs essential housekeeping and material handling duties on a drilling rig, ensuring operational efficiency and safety. This role supports various rig operations including cargo management, equipment preparation, and assistance to technical staff.
Primary Duties
- Prepare drilling equipment before use and maintain it during storage.
- Maintain cleanliness and orderliness in drilling and deck areas of the rig.
- Safely transport drilling equipment and materials around the rig and drill floor.
- Clean, prepare, and handle tubular components such as drill collars and casing on pipe racks.
- Perform fire watch duties while welding operations are ongoing, as applicable.
- Serve as relief personnel on the rig floor when qualified.
- Assist in the installation and removal of Blowout Preventer (BOP) and wellhead equipment.
- Support electricians, welders, and mechanics as directed in their tasks.
- Ensure all tools and equipment are properly stowed after use or at shift end.
- Conduct general housekeeping tasks, including cleaning rig areas, the pipe rack, storage rooms, pump rooms, and maintaining equipment paintwork and protection.
- Prepare tubular goods for running in by removing protectors, cleaning, greasing threads, measuring, numbering, and assisting with running in.
- Offload and reload materials as required.
- Assist derrick personnel and mud testers with mud system maintenance.
- Participate in rig skidding preparations and assist during rig skidding operations.
- Help with regular area inspections and stand in for different work disciplines when needed.
- Hand over tasks effectively to incoming Roustabout personnel.
- Operate the Man-lift (Mobile Elevated Work Platform) after completing necessary training and certification.
Safety Responsibilities
- Comply with company safety policies and take all necessary precautions to protect personal and coworkers' health and safety.
- Utilize safety observation tools such as STOP and Permit to Work systems to identify and mitigate hazards proactively.
- Maintain equipment in safe operational condition and withdraw unsafe equipment from use immediately.
- Participate actively in housekeeping efforts to support overall rig safety.
- Secure accident or incident sites promptly and report to senior representatives for investigation.
- Report hazards related to safety, health, equipment, and environment promptly to supervisors.
- Properly utilize personal protective equipment at all times.
- Attend scheduled safety meetings, drills, and trainings.
- Follow all client and site-specific safety protocols and permit requirements.
- Conduct scheduled safety inspections as required.
