About the Role
Essex County Council is seeking a permanent, full-time Residential Worker based in Colchester. The position offers an annual salary ranging from £28,914 to £36,581 (inclusive of allowances). The role involves working fixed-based shifts in a five-bedded home providing care for young people aged 11 to 17 who have experienced trauma. The Residential Worker will be an essential member of a multidisciplinary team dedicated to delivering nurturing, therapeutic care to these children.
Working Hours and Benefits

- 37-hour workweek comprising early (07:00 to 14:30) and late (14:00 to 21:30) shifts, Monday to Sunday, with every other weekend off

Key Responsibilities and Skills
The primary focus is on providing therapeutic and nurturing care, emulating parental support for young people who have undergone trauma. The worker must exhibit flexibility and adaptability, managing challenging behaviors including aggression through de-escalation techniques. Effective written and oral communication skills are essential.
Requirements and Eligibility
- Applicants must be at least 21 years of age
- Right to work in the UK without restrictions; visa sponsorship is not available
- Previous experience in children’s residential care is advantageous but not mandatory; transferable skills and a calm, patient approach are valuable
- Completion of a Level 3 Diploma within two years following probation is mandatory if not already possessed; full support and training provided
