About the Role
This permanent full-time position based in Twizel, Canterbury, offers an opportunity to play a key part in conserving highly significant biodiversity within Aotearoa's unique landscapes. The Ranger will directly manage a specialized limestone habitat harboring five endemic plant species and lead restoration efforts for dryland plant ecosystems while contributing to broader biodiversity fieldwork across the basin.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee critically endangered limestone tor plant populations to ensure their protection and growth.
- Conduct monitoring and active management for various threatened plant species, including those critically endangered and exclusive to the Mackenzie Basin.
- Support botanical surveys and land use assessments associated with Crown Land Pastoral Lease (CPLA) areas.
- Contribute to diverse field activities such as braided river bird counts, plus monitoring of invertebrates and native fish.
Skills and Experience Required
- Proven expertise in conducting detailed botanical surveys and accurate plant species identification.
- Strong understanding of the dryland flora specific to the Mackenzie Basin region.
- Meticulous skills in recording field data and managing ecological datasets.
- Competence in analyzing data and delivering comprehensive, well-written reports.
- Effective communication abilities to collaborate within teams and with stakeholders.
- Possession of a working at heights certificate or equivalent safety qualification.
- Practical experience in conservation and fieldwork activities.
- A full New Zealand driver’s license is mandatory.
- Unit standards certification for operating 4WD vehicles.
- Capability to work both independently and collaboratively as needed.
- Current workplace first aid certification.
Preferred Qualifications
Having a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience, is advantageous.
