Role Overview

We are looking for a Principal Machine Learning Engineer to join our GenAI Products & Innovation Forge based in Singapore. This role emphasizes hands-on technical leadership in pioneering advanced generative AI products integrated with enterprise knowledge, focusing on rapid prototyping and applied research to transform state-of-the-art methods into impactful innovations throughout Atlassian.

Responsibilities

• Innovate novel methods for knowledge-based large language models (LLMs), embedding techniques, and multimodal modeling.
• Investigate and implement fine-tuning, post-training adjustments, and retrieval-augmented strategies to tailor foundational models for Atlassian’s data.
• Lead exploratory technical initiatives that push the boundaries of applied generative AI modeling.
• Conduct proof-of-concept experiments involving agentic workflows and novel generative AI assistants.
• Convert research insights into rapid, functional prototypes demonstrating user benefits.
• Develop and deploy evaluation frameworks to assess aspects such as model groundedness, hallucination detection, and human-in-the-loop feedback.
• Provide technical mentorship and leadership within a focused engineering team.
• Guide design and implementation of components including retrievers, rankers, orchestration, and scalable serving infrastructure.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with product and platform teams to transition prototypes into robust, scalable systems.
• Influence the strategic roadmap of the Forge as a central hub for GenAI innovation and applied research globally.
• Work closely with teams from Rovo, Jira Search, Knowledge AI, and Platform to maximize cross-team impact.
• Advocate for responsible AI practices, emphasizing groundedness and data integrity across all innovations.

Qualifications and Skills

• Minimum six years of experience in machine learning or AI engineering with a specialty in large language models, natural language processing, or search technologies.
• Proven success in developing and deploying ML-based or generative AI-powered products.
• Practical knowledge of retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), embeddings, hybrid retrieval, or agentic workflow systems.
• Strong expertise in scaling machine learning solutions from prototype stages to production environments.
• In-depth understanding of generative AI ecosystems including tools and frameworks such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Mistral, and open-source alternatives, alongside fine-tuning and serving frameworks.
• Technical proficiency across modeling, infrastructure, and orchestration layers, including experience with LangChain, LlamaIndex, and vector databases.
• Excellent rapid prototyping skills that effectively balance agility with rigorous evaluation.
• Capability to establish technical vision and provide influential leadership within teams.
• Master’s degree or PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related discipline preferred, or equivalent practical experience.
• Desirable experience includes work with multimodal models, knowledge graphs, semantic embeddings, and expertise in evaluation metrics for search and generative AI (e.g., NDCG, groundedness, human preference modeling).
• Contributions to open-source machine learning projects or generative AI research communities are a plus.
• A passion for mentoring and promoting innovation, contributing toward building the AI innovation hub in Singapore.
