Job description

Job Overview

Assume the role of a community leader representing Canada Post by managing the local Post Office. The Postmaster reports to the Superintendent/Local Area Manager, ensuring enthusiastic customer engagement while promoting postal products and services to both residents and businesses within the community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary liaison with the community regarding Canada Post's services and products.
  • Market and sell postal products and services to residents and local businesses.
  • Secure appropriate premises centrally located and accessible within the community within 30 days if hired.
  • Oversee post office operations to ensure adherence to retail hours and delivery expectations.
  • Manage postal revenues, assets, and values with accuracy.
  • Maintain records and prepare necessary reports for management.
  • Support the effective administration of mail delivery routes.
  • Occasionally sort mail directed to postal boxes.
  • Provide supervision to post office staff as needed.
  • Keep the post office clean, orderly, and in line with Canada Post standards.
  • Operate the facility efficiently, responsibly, and with due diligence.

Candidate Qualifications

  • Possess a High School Diploma or an equivalent provincial qualification, combined with experience in business administration regarded favorably.
  • Have access to owned or leased premises that are suitable, centrally located, and barrier-free, available no later than one month before start date.
  • Experience dealing with customers in retail or service settings, including handling sales and cash operations.
  • Understanding of postal regulations, mail processing methods, and postal service protocols.
  • Physically capable of lifting mail containers weighing up to 50 lbs, maneuvering mailboxes, sorting mail, and standing for long periods.

Premises Requirements and Conditions

  • Premises must be fully accessible for persons with disabilities and subject to inspection and approval at least one month prior to hiring.
  • Postmasters are responsible for costs related to rent or lease, heating, lighting, cleaning, routine maintenance, snow removal, municipal property taxes, and necessary insurance coverage.
  • Appointments are governed by provisions of the Canada Post Act.
  • Public service hours are determined by Canada Post and may vary based on circumstances.

Additional Information

  • Priority in transfer applications will be given to employees who are members of the Canadian Postmasters and Assistants Association (CPAA), especially those located in the posted competition area.
  • Total weekly working hours are 12.
  • A leasing allowance of $1,534 per year is offered to help cover operational costs of the Post Office.
  • Additional annual supplemental allowances may be provided to assist with premises-related expenses.
