Maintenance Officer

Company and Location

The Maintenance Officer position is based at Alpha Agricultural and Processing Company Limited (AAPCL) located in Winneba, Central Region, Ghana. AAPCL specialises in running a fully automated battery cage poultry farm focused on layer production with a capacity of about 110,000 birds.

Role Overview

The Maintenance Officer is tasked with inspecting, maintaining, repairing, and ensuring continuous operation of all mechanical, electrical, and automation systems on the poultry farm. This role is critical to keeping equipment running efficiently, minimising downtime, supporting animal welfare, and sustaining uninterrupted egg production.

Key Duties

• Perform routine inspections, servicing, and upkeep of farm machinery, equipment, and automated poultry systems.
• Identify and repair mechanical breakdowns affecting machinery and production equipment, and assist with electrical and automation repairs as needed.
• Create and follow preventive maintenance schedules, conducting regular equipment and infrastructure checks.
• Ensure that feeding, drinking, egg collection, manure removal, ventilation, cooling, lighting, water pumping, generator, and backup systems operate properly.
• Maintain poultry houses, farm buildings, utilities, plumbing, drainage, and supporting infrastructure.
• Respond quickly to equipment failures and service needs to reduce production downtime.
• Support installation, testing, and commissioning of new equipment and machinery.
• Manage inventory of spare parts, tools, and consumables; request replacements when necessary.
• Adhere to safety protocols and farm biosecurity standards during maintenance tasks.
• Collaborate with Electrical Engineer and Production Manager to ensure equipment reliability.
• Keep detailed maintenance records and prepare reports on system performance and servicing activities.
• Coordinate with external technicians for specialized repairs.
• Carry out additional duties assigned by management.

Qualifications and Experience

• Higher National Diploma or Certificate in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electromechanical, or related technical disciplines.
• At least two years of hands-on experience in industrial, agricultural, manufacturing, or poultry farm maintenance roles.
• Experience working with automated poultry production or industrial production machinery is preferred.

Skills and Competencies

• Strong grasp of mechanical maintenance principles and equipment servicing.
• Knowledge of poultry farm equipment and supporting infrastructure.
• Proficient in performing preventive and corrective maintenance procedures.
• Basic understanding of electrical systems including motors, pumps, and automation.
• Ability to diagnose equipment faults and determine appropriate remedies.
• Ability to interpret technical drawings, manuals, and maintenance guidelines.
• High attention to detail and dedication to quality workmanship.
• Effective verbal communication and basic written reporting capabilities.
• Capability to handle pressure and act swiftly in maintenance emergencies.
