Forward Deployed Engineering Manager - Generative AI, Google Cloud

About the Role

This position leads a team of AI/ML engineers who implement advanced generative AI solutions directly within client environments, bridging the gap between theoretical AI products and real-world applications. As a manager, you will provide technical guidance, oversee collaborations across product, engineering, and sales, and help the team tackle complex production challenges such as data preparation, system integration, and state management.

Key Responsibilities

• Set and enforce coding standards, architectural best practices, and performance benchmarks to raise team engineering quality.
• Collaborate with sales and technical leaders to define requirements for strategic engagements, deploying specialized AI experts to crucial accounts.
• Lead recruitment efforts for the Forward Deployed Engineering team, assessing candidates on AI/ML, systems engineering, and software development skills.
• Identify and address skill deficiencies in emerging AI technologies such as Model Context Protocol, tool-calling methods, and foundational AI models to keep the team at the forefront of innovation.
• Partner with product and engineering divisions to resolve technical bottlenecks and translate customer feedback into actionable product roadmaps and internal tools for operational efficiency.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in STEM or equivalent practical experience.
• At least 8 years in cloud computing or similar technical customer-facing roles, including proficiency in Python.
• Minimum 2 years managing software engineering or forward deployed engineering teams within cloud environments.
• Proven experience in developing AI or generative AI solutions, including designing multi-agent workflows and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) systems.
• Demonstrated leadership and people management capabilities.

Preferred Qualifications

• Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in AI, Computer Science, or related field.
• Expertise in architecting AI solutions layered on complex infrastructures with considerations for data sovereignty and secure governance.
• Experience in designing user-friendly interfaces for complex AI/agentic systems, emphasizing transparency and explainability to build user trust.
• Knowledge of building secure, observable multi-agent systems utilizing design patterns like ReAct, self-reflection, with advanced state management and tool-calling protocols.
• Fluency in European languages such as French, Spanish, or Italian is advantageous.

Additional Details

Interviews generally require onsite attendance. Compensation in Ireland ranges from €186,000 to €191,000 annually, supplemented by a 25% bonus target, equity offerings, and benefits.
