Forward Deployed Engineering Manager - AI, Google Cloud

About the Role

Join our GenAI Forward Deployed Engineering (FDE) team as a Manager responsible for leading a group of AI/ML engineers who integrate cutting-edge AI products with real-world production environments at customer sites. This role is hands-on, requiring direct involvement in coding, debugging, and deploying custom agentic AI solutions. You will provide deep technical guidance while aligning strategically with Product, Engineering, and Google Cloud Sales leadership. Your goal is to empower your team to overcome production challenges such as data preparation, complex integrations, and state management to bring AI to enterprise-grade maturity.

This position offers the opportunity to work with Google Cloud's advanced AI portfolio, including Gemini models and the Vertex AI platform, alongside DeepMind's experts to revolutionize business AI deployments globally.

Key Responsibilities

• Act as the technical lead by defining coding standards, architectural best practices, and performance benchmarks to promote engineering excellence within your team.
• Collaborate with Sales and Technology leaders to gather requirements for high-impact projects and deploy specialized engineers in MLOps, GenMedia, or Agentic systems to important customer accounts.
• Lead recruitment efforts for the FDE team, assessing candidates’ AI/ML, systems engineering, and programming capabilities to build a strong engineering group.
• Identify and address knowledge gaps in emerging AI technologies such as Model Context Protocol, tool-calling frameworks, and foundational models to keep the team at the forefront of industry advancements.
• Work closely with Product and Engineering teams to unblock technical challenges, help convert field insights into actionable development roadmaps, and create internal tools that improve operational efficiency.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• At least 8 years of experience in cloud computing or technical roles that interact directly with customers.
• Minimum of 2 years managing engineering teams focused on software, forward deployed engineering, or customer-facing technical cloud roles.
• Proficiency in Python or comparable programming languages.
• Experience building AI or generative AI solutions using AI tools, or designing multi-agent workflows or Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) systems.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's degree or PhD in AI, Computer Science, or a relevant technical specialty.
• Experience driving agent-based transformations in industry settings.
• Expertise in architecting secure, observable multi-agent AI systems utilizing complex design patterns like ReAct and self-reflection, including state management and tool invocation protocols.
• Capability in designing user-friendly interfaces for complex AI and agentic systems that emphasize contextual engineering, transparency, and explainability to build user trust.
• Skills in architecting AI solutions within enterprise infrastructures with attention to data sovereignty and governance compliance.
• Proven competence in conducting discovery interviews to uncover business challenges and translate sophisticated hardware or AI-related constraints for executive and technical stakeholders.
