Position Summary

The role of Engineering Director, DBA, involves overseeing the entire lifecycle of enterprise-grade cloud database platforms, including design, deployment, and optimization. You will lead multi-cloud architectural implementations particularly on Alibaba Cloud and AWS to ensure solutions deliver high availability, superior performance, and cost efficiency.

Core Responsibilities

• Design and refine cloud database architectures for services including Alibaba Cloud (RDS, PolarDB, Redis, MongoDB) and AWS (RDS, Aurora, ElastiCache, DynamoDB).
• Determine the most suitable database models—relational, NoSQL, or NewSQL—and service types, whether managed or self-hosted, aligned with business demands.
• Deploy and manage high availability and disaster recovery strategies such as Alibaba Cloud cross-zone setups and AWS Multi-AZ with cross-region replication.
• Use native monitoring tools like Alibaba Cloud CloudMonitor and AWS CloudWatch alongside third-party software such as Prometheus and Grafana to observe performance and health.
• Analyze and enhance performance by diagnosing slow queries, lock conflicts, and resource constraints; optimize SQL queries and indexing strategies.
• Manage incident resolution swiftly by addressing issues like replication lag, connection pool saturation, and storage scalability.
• Ensure robust security and compliance by managing access controls through Alibaba Cloud RAM and AWS IAM, conducting database upgrades and audit log reviews to meet GDPR and other regulatory standards.
• Automate database deployment and operations utilizing Terraform, Ansible, Alibaba Cloud ROS, and AWS CloudFormation.
• Optimize cost through techniques like auto-scaling, reserved instances, and storage tiering such as AWS S3 Glacier.
• Collaborate with development teams to review database architecture, enforce SQL code standards, and embed database management into CI/CD pipelines.
• Lead and mentor a team of DBAs, driving timely project completion and effective incident management.

Qualifications and Experience

• Proven expertise with cloud database services on Alibaba Cloud or AWS, with familiarity in both ecosystems.
• Strong knowledge of MySQL, PostgreSQL, Redis, and experience with SQL performance tuning and troubleshooting.
• Hands-on experience using database migration tools such as AWS DMS and Alibaba Cloud DTS, including cross-cloud synchronization capabilities.
• Minimum of 5 years in database administration, with at least 2 years managing cloud-based databases.
• Experience handling large-scale databases (terabyte scale), including sharding and read/write splitting strategies.
• Demonstrated leadership in cloud database migrations, disaster recovery exercises, or hybrid cloud projects preferred.
• Excellent documentation skills for standard operating procedures and contingency plans.
• Strong communication abilities to facilitate coordination across development, operations, and business units.
• Preferred certifications include Alibaba Cloud ACP/ACE (Database) or AWS Certified Database Specialty.
• Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related disciplines.
