Role Overview

As Director of Software Engineering, you will lead and expand an exceptional team of frontend and backend engineers and line managers. Your responsibilities include defining and executing a roadmap aligned with business priorities to deliver valuable features while enhancing scalability, resilience, and reliability.

Responsibilities

• Recruit, lead, and develop a high-performing engineering team composed of frontend and backend developers and their managers.
• Create and implement strategic plans to meet critical business needs related to feature delivery, scalability, and system reliability.
• Lead complex initiatives involving collaboration with distributed global teams and partners.
• Support engineering growth and adherence to best practices by mentoring engineers worldwide.

Required Experience and Skills

• 10 to 15 years of experience in software engineering or site reliability engineering focusing on scalable and fault-tolerant distributed systems.
• A minimum of 5 years in senior management or director roles leading engineering teams, including oversight of frontline managers.
• Management experience in full-stack development encompassing both frontend and backend technologies.
• Hands-on experience with SaaS software in production environments, proficient with AWS or other cloud platforms, and knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, observability, scalability, and performance optimization.
• Familiarity with multiple development platforms and services such as microservices and APIs.
• Proven track record in leading product development in early-stage or incubator environments.
• Experience collaborating with customers, executive leadership, and business stakeholders.
• Competency in defining and monitoring OKRs, KPIs, and team objectives.
• Strong understanding and practice of inclusive hiring strategies.
• Excellent critical thinking and communication skills, with ability to convey ideas clearly both verbally and in writing.
• Capability to manage competing priorities, make decisions, and communicate them effectively.
• Ability to operate at both strategic (10,000-foot view) and detailed levels.
• Focus on balancing technical problem-solving with business considerations and trade-offs.
• Experience within the eCommerce industry is advantageous.

Technical Expertise

• Strong software development background with recent practical coding experience, known as an "Engineers Engineer."
• Capability to produce clear, comprehensive documentation that aligns business and technical requirements.
• Proficiency in guiding teams toward timely resolution of technical issues by posing relevant questions and providing solutions.
• Experience designing pragmatic and flexible systems that avoid unnecessary complexity.
• Knowledge of software engineering best practices including design, coding, testing, version control, documentation, builds, deployment, and operations.
• Skillful in various technical analysis methods such as data mining and prototyping and knowing when to apply them.
