Job description

Position Overview

Join Te Unua Museum of Southland as a Digital Designer - Technician in a permanent full-time role, bringing your creativity together with technical skills to craft immersive, interactive exhibition experiences. Working at the crossroads of design, storytelling, technology, and cultural heritage, you will play a pivotal role in delivering digital exhibition content that deeply connects visitors with Southland's rich stories.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create and produce digital content, including motion graphics and screen-based media, for exhibitions and programs.
  • Develop multimedia animations and motion graphics leveraging Adobe Creative Cloud tools.
  • Design, implement, and maintain interactive exhibition installations such as touchscreens, kiosks, projection systems, and LED displays.
  • Configure and support exhibition hardware and digital technology systems ensuring optimal performance.
  • Collaborate closely with curators, designers, and preparators to coordinate exhibition planning, installation, and de-installation.
  • Prepare and optimize digital assets tailored to various exhibition platforms and environments.
  • Apply user experience and interface design principles to develop accessible and intuitive visitor interactions for diverse audiences.
  • Assist in producing additional exhibition materials including signage, publications, educational resources, branding, and other visitor experiences.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues and document system configurations for exhibition technologies.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Completion of a recognized tertiary qualification in digital design, graphic design, multimedia design, exhibition design, interactive media, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of one year’s professional experience in a similar creative or technical capacity.
  • Advanced proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite applications such as After Effects, Premiere Pro, Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign.
  • Experience in designing and producing motion graphics, digital, and screen-based content.
  • Strong knowledge of audiovisual systems, digital hardware, and interactive technology implementations.
  • Hands-on experience with digital displays, projection devices, and touchscreen technologies.
  • Capability in creating user-centered digital experiences following UX/UI best practices focused on visitor engagement.
  • Awareness and commitment to accessibility standards for inclusive cultural experiences.
  • Exceptional attention to detail with a consistent record of delivering high-quality work.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills capable of handling multiple concurrent priorities.
  • Collaborative approach with the ability to integrate with creative, technical, and cultural teams.
  • Understanding of bicultural principles, incorporating Te Tiriti o Waitangi and mātauraka Māori perspectives appropriately.
  • Appreciation of museums’ role in linking communities with culture, heritage, and education by fostering meaningful visitor engagement.

Location and Work Hours

This role is based in Invercargill, Southland, New Zealand—a region known for its natural beauty, cultural richness, and friendly community atmosphere. The position requires 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
