Role Overview

We are looking for an Intermediate Developer to join the Open Source Team. This role focuses on enhancing 1Password’s open source initiatives and developing developer tools that integrate seamlessly into programming workflows via IDE plugins and agent hooks. You will engage in full feature lifecycle development, from planning through deployment and customer support, delivering consistent and quality results.

Use of AI at 1Password

Our teams employ AI thoughtfully across product and software development to boost speed and maintain quality and security standards. This includes AI-assisted coding, large-scale synthesis of user research, and rapid AI-generated design iterations. We uphold strict principles ensuring human accountability and rigorous evaluation before product release.

Key Responsibilities

• Understand and expertly use your development tools to implement features, enhancements, and fixes across various codebases.
• Participate actively in all stages of feature development including planning, execution, release, and supporting customers post-launch.
• Maintain high code quality by creating new testing strategies, writing thorough unit and integration tests, documenting work extensively, and reporting issues accurately.
• Plan solutions strategically, reuse proven development and security patterns, and submit well-documented code changes.
• Contribute to and review formal proposals (RFCs/RFDs), promote best practices during code reviews, and provide constructive peer feedback.
• Support customer service efforts by troubleshooting complex issues and prioritizing valuable user feedback.
• Engage in team activities such as refinement, prioritization, and group estimation sessions.
• Identify and pursue improvements, including codebase cleanup, community tools advancement, and enhancing IDE integration usability.

Candidate Criteria

• Proven experience independently managing software development of scoped features from planning to release.
• Good command of relevant tools and technology stacks to execute tasks efficiently.
• Strong knowledge of modern development workflows, including version control (Git), IDE usage, terminal commands, debugging, testing, and dependency management.
• Exceptional documentation and communication skills suitable for public-facing repositories.
• Passion for developer tooling, IDE and agent integration, and involvement with open source communities.
• Keen interest in agent-assisted development tools aimed at improving security and workflow efficiency.
• Security-first mindset consistent with 1Password’s principles.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience contributing to open source projects.
• Familiarity with AI-enabled or agent-based IDEs or building extensions/plugins for code editors.

Location & Salary

This is a remote position accepting applicants in Canada and the US.

For Canadian hires: Annual salary ranges from 111000 to 155000 CAD, including an extensive benefits package with health and dental coverage, retirement plans, paid time off, equity grants, and incentive programs.

For US hires: Annual salary ranges from 123000 to 172000 USD, with comparable benefits including health, dental, 401k, paid leave, equity, and incentives.
