Job description

Position Overview

This is a remote, full-time opportunity based in Ireland with Deciphex, an innovative company developing AI solutions for digital pathology. The role involves independent research ownership with access to extensive whole-slide image datasets, collaborating closely with domain experts like pathologists and AI researchers. The work contributes to EU-funded projects, supporting advancements in animal research ethics.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create benchmark datasets and evaluation frameworks for pathology foundation models where public benchmarks are not yet available.
  • Perform statistical analyses on control datasets, examining trends, confounders, and technical batch effects from multiple sites and imaging scanners.
  • Curate and rigorously quality-check large whole-slide image collections along with their research metadata.
  • Validate AI models for pathology and develop scientific evidence to support their robustness.
  • Collaborate closely with pathologists to ensure datasets and results reflect accurate tissue morphology.
  • Disseminate findings through publications and presentations.

Candidate Profile

  • Strong research background demonstrated by a PhD in a quantitative or biomedical discipline, or equivalent industrial research experience.
  • Experience applying machine learning techniques to biomedical datasets, preferably imaging data.
  • Ability to comprehend and translate scientific literature into testable hypotheses in new areas.
  • Proficiency managing the full scientific research cycle: question formulation, data gathering, analysis, validation, and communication.
  • Solid grounding in applied statistics and reproducible data analysis methodologies.
  • Programming expertise in Python and/or R, plus familiarity with SQL databases.
  • Effective scientific communication skills to explain complex methods, limitations, and conclusions to diverse stakeholders such as pathologists, engineers, and partners.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience in computational pathology or whole-slide image analysis.
  • Familiarity with preclinical toxicology study designs.
  • Knowledge of pathology foundation models or self-supervised learning techniques.
  • Understanding of regulatory standards like SEND/CDISC and Good Laboratory Practices (GLP).
  • Previous involvement in EU-funded collaborative research projects.
