Overview

The Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC) is recruiting for the position of Correctional Officer Trainee at Easterling Correctional Facility in Clio, AL. This entry-level, full-time role offers a starting wage of $27 per hour along with state benefits and paid training opportunities. Officers play a vital role in ensuring the custody, safety, rehabilitation, and reentry of incarcerated adults within state prisons.

Responsibilities

• Monitoring inmate movement by standing watch in hallways or observation towers.
• Supervising inmate work groups in areas such as kitchens, workshops, laundries, and recreational zones, including providing guidance for their manual tasks and managing inmate check-in and check-out procedures.
• Conducting safety and sanitation inspections of living quarters and searching inmates/visitors for contraband.
• Maintaining high alertness to identify and report unusual conditions or disturbances; routinely inspecting security doors, fences, and related equipment.
• Performing regular and surprise inmate counts and continuous supervision of assigned inmates.
• Preparing reports documenting inmates’ behavior, work progress, violations, and noteworthy incidents.
• Operating transfer vehicles safely and maintaining safety equipment such as screens in excellent condition.
• Educating inmates about prison rules, procedures, available services, and providing assistance with personal issues, education, vocational training, and work assignments.
• Observing inmates' adaptation to the correctional environment and submitting behavioral evaluation reports.
• Providing instruction related to personal hygiene, discipline, and etiquette to inmates.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED certificate (must provide copy during hiring).
• At least 19 years old.
• Either valid certification of passing the Basic Ability Test (BAT) for Law Enforcement Officers or proof of an Associate's degree or higher from an accredited college/university (documents required during hiring).
• Note: Those previously certified by APOSTC and active within the past 10 years are exempt from the BAT requirement.

Special Conditions

• Must be a U.S. citizen upon appointment.
• Valid driver's license from state of residence required.
• Completion of designated training during probation, including a mandatory 10-week program at the ADOC Training Center in Selma, AL.
• Successful completion of a pre-employment physical exam as specified by ADOC.
• Clear background investigation, drug screening, and fingerprint-based criminal history check. Convictions for felonies or domestic violence disqualify applicants.
• Veterans must have an honorable discharge from the U.S. Armed Forces.
• Willingness to accept work assignments anywhere within Alabama.

Compensation and Benefits

• Salary range: $27 to $34 per hour, equating to $55,375.20 to $70,718.40 annually.
• Potential to earn up to 30% more within the first two years.
• Subsistence pay of $12 per physically worked day, which may total approximately $2,500 to $3,000 annually.
