Role Overview
Reporting to the Production Supervisor, the CNC Machinist will operate multiple CNC machines producing large, highly precise components with tolerances down to 0.0005 inches using four- and five-axis mills, lathes, and mill-turn machines. Emphasis on safety and quality is paramount.
Daily Responsibilities
- Operate various BWXT CNC machinery to fabricate components of differing complexity.
- Design and manufacture tooling and fixtures when required.
- Collaborate with CNC Programmers and Engineers to identify key dimensions for process monitoring.
- Adjust and reprogram CNC operations in compliance with approved process change requests.
- Set up, troubleshoot, and run multiple machines, including CNC lathes, mills, bandsaws, and manual equipment.
- Interpret technical drawings to accurately set up parts ensuring quality and production timelines are met.
- Transfer CNC programs between machines as needed.
- Ensure tooling management practices are followed across the workspace.
- Partner with Manufacturing Engineering to validate and refine CNC programs and standardize procedures.
- Adhere to approved work instructions and strive for first-time setup success and expedited quality control approvals.
- Perform machine adjustments and tool setups per specifications.
- Conduct in-process inspections using precision measurement tools and report any defects or deviations.
- Execute preventative maintenance tasks such as coolant checks and filter replacements.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment and notify appropriate personnel of machine issues.
- Use computer systems for basic operational tasks.
- Safely handle components using lifting equipment like cranes and forklifts.
Required Qualifications
- Proven ability operating a range of BWXT CNC machines on complex parts.
- Educational or experiential background in manufacturing and CNC machining.
- Possession of a CNC Machinist Certificate of Qualification is advantageous.
- Minimum five years’ experience with 4- and 5-axis CNC mills, multi-axis lathes, long lathes, or mill-turn equipment.
- Experience in aerospace, defense, or nuclear manufacturing sectors is highly preferred.
- Strong skills interpreting engineering drawings with a solid grasp of metrology and GD&T principles.
- Excellent communication skills and a collaborative, problem-solving mindset.
- Ability to independently manage tasks with discipline meeting industry standards.
- Experience using cranes and forklifts for moving heavy components.
