This position involves ensuring dimensional accuracy of various steel castings at multiple stages prior to machining and dispatch.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct dimensional inspections of raw, proof-machined, and finished steel castings following approved drawings and specifications.
  • Inspect intricate components such as pump casings, valve bodies, and other heavy engineering castings.
  • Verify critical dimensional parameters including machining allowances, wall thicknesses, bore dimensions, flange locations, center lines, and overall casting geometry.
  • Perform layout inspections using surface tables, height gauges, and conventional measuring instruments.
  • Utilize precision tools such as Vernier Calipers, Micrometers, Height Gauges, Bore Gauges, and Depth Gauges for inspection.
  • Apply template, fixture, and gauge-based inspection methods as appropriate.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, dimensional tolerances, and Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) requirements proficiently.
  • Identify defects such as mismatches, core shifts, distortions, warpage, and dimensional deviations before release for machining.
  • Mark required datum/reference points and machining references on castings.
  • Maintain detailed dimensional inspection reports and ensure traceability records are up to date.
  • Collaborate with Foundry Production, Pattern Shop, Fettling, Machine Shop, and Quality teams to address dimensional discrepancies.
  • Engage in root cause analysis and implement corrective actions for dimensional non-conformities.
  • Support customer or third-party dimensional inspection and witnessing activities when required.
  • Ensure all measuring instruments are calibrated and valid prior to use.

Candidate Profile

  • Educational qualification: ITI or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Professional experience: Between 3 to 8 years of dimensional inspection experience, ideally within a steel casting foundry environment.
  • Experience with large, complex pump and valve castings is favored.
  • Strong grasp of casting dimensional inspection, layout inspections, and casting tolerances.
  • Sound understanding of machining allowances, core shift, distortion control, and GD&T.
  • Proficient documentation and analytical problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently with a hands-on approach to inspecting complex steel castings.
